FELLOW TRAVELERS E7 - REACTION

This is truly the wildest episode so far!

FELLOW TRAVELERS E7 - REACTION

Comments

There's a film, don't know if it's on DVD, but is on YouTube in appalling quality, And The Band Played On, which tackles the earliest days of the A.I.D.S. pandemic. Not an easy watch either, but a stellar cast and a very, very good film.

Jacqueline Hahn

Ok, I'm late to add this, but I'm rewatching this show through your reactions and at the end Alex talks about how getting behind this show is more than just "I like watching TV". Jonathan Bailey actually talks about this in the interview, how he views being involved in this project and watching this show as a political act. He is so well-spoken and makes an excellent point I think! Here's the link to the interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WCJdR1OWhs

Andrea Kammerer

Y'all should react to Milk

Nomi Saxton

Matt was nominated for a golden globe and I think they were both nominated for a critic choice award lucky:)))

Archie

Wow, this episode. Not an easy watch. But well done to the show and your reactions bringing all this history to our attention it is stuff that should be taught and makes me want to learn more. Am not ready for episode 8

Clash

I went to the New York Pride March in 1975. The first one in NY was in 1973 after Stonewall. In 1975 I had just graduated from college. The parades were still very new back then.

My father was married to my mother for 29 years and produced my older brother (‘79) and me (’81). When they FINALLY divorced in late ‘99, my father moved in and lived w his “roommate” until the roommate passed in the mid 2010’s. They only had a 1 bedroom apartment with 1 bed. So even living w the man he loved, in modern times, he was still closeted. My mother still (20+ years after the fact) gets HIV tested every 6 months, even tho I don’t believe he would have cheated. She hated him for being gay and called him disgusting and a pervert and every other name in the book. She couldn’t believe she ever loved something like that. I can’t ever imaging what it was like for my dad- born in ‘52 to a minister father and mother that worked for Billy Graham (iykyk) and to live a lie for 68 years (when he passed away) when I, as his daughter, have always been able to live my queer truth once I figured it all out. I love your conversations and thoughts on ALL your content and am so happy I have found this community ❤️❤️

I read that JB only submitted for best supporting actor. Not sure why though. Here is an article I found: https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/entertainment/a46105353/golden-globes-2024-fellow-travelers-jonathan-bailey-snub-twitter/

Reem

I thought that that was why Hawk wanted Tim to stay during the threesome, so he could get it up.

Jamie

I completely agree. JB stole the show and deserves all the praise and recognition that he is getting. The only tiny knock I had was his American accent, but the rest made up for it and it's not like my speech sounds great all the time either, so who am I to gripe about someone's accent, anyway?

Jamie

There's this American radio show called "This American Life". Sometimes the stories are so strange and so unlikely that it makes you rethink all you ever thought about. Alex and Josh talk about drug use. Check this radio segment out. The one page contains a Prologue, and several Acts and should be listened in that order. I hope you can hear it in the UK, because it is such an unlikely story about ordinary people trying to help those addicted to drugs. https://www.thisamericanlife.org/809/the-call

Although Matt Bomer plays the main protagonist (or antagonist) and is quite good in his own way, it's Jonathan Bailey whose talent really explodes. He portrays so many different characters from naive Tim, to military Tim, to seminary Tim, to social word/Ned Flanders Tim, to AIDS/activist Tim. Watch him in all of these scenes, and it's like an Eddie Murphy movie where Murphy plays everyone except Bailey does it without excessive prosthetics.

Charlzz

Watch the movie "Milk" (starring Sean Penn) if you want to know about Harvey Milk and what happened to him. It is a great movie!

Hawk saying „let me die“ was the end of me… as a mom I totally felt that. Parents should never bury their children. 💔

Frances

I knew that but was hoping to actually see/read what it said… maybe I missed the lengthy shot.

Shari

It was a letter of condolence regarding Jackson's death.

Dorabella

I started to comment about the threesome with Craig and couldn’t word it properly. Yes, Tim was Hawk’s love of his life.

Diane Furlong

Love has no limits or boundaries, our community is driven by love and one another, keep strong and resilient

Gina Lipkin

They cried together, they loved together, they have felt and experienced it all together, Hawk and Tim's connection is deep and unique and always there, cannot be forgotten or broken, no matter the years apart, it returns

Gina Lipkin

This was a hard watch for me, reliving it. I was 21 when I moved to SF in February of ‘78. I was just 22 when Harvey and Mayor Moscone were murdered in cold blood. The shear insanity of it, us trying to wrap our personal and collective heads around what had happened. The trial. The verdict. The White Night Riots, the brutal retribution of the police sweep in the Castro, the police getting their own back, to teach us a lesson they said, coming into our safe places to perpetrate their violence. Every time I walk the streets of the Castro, walk by City Hall, walk my own neighborhood of Polk Gulch, I remember. I see the tens of thousands of candles. I hear our voices raised in protest. My friends the next day, the sheer exhaustion etched into their faces, smelling of smoke, their voices hoarse from screaming nonstop. We must never forget. Never relax. Never let them take back what is inherently ours. And never ever let go of the need to fight in the streets for our divine right to live in freedom and love.

Stephen Bertram

I don't watch either of those shows, but I feel like Fellow Travelers should get just as much acclaim. I hope it does, It's an important show, even in 2023 where things have changed and also stayed the same in a lot of ways.

Jamie

It seems all the love is for Succession and White Lotus. I don't watch Succession, and both seasons of White Lotus has taken the "kill the gays" trope to extreme levels. Hopefully, White Lotus 3 won't come out in time to be eligible to leave space for this show.

Brian

Nice haircut Josh! Pumpkin pie is my favorite! Excellent reaction of this emotion episode. Thanks Alex and Josh

Diane Furlong

Thought it was interesting… in the beginning Hawk can’t get it up with his blonde Dr. Feelgood boy toy…but only when Skippy is involved can he then have sex with blondie (sorry forgot name). Also, What did the letter that Hawkes daughter find/read say? Such an amazing show. Oh! And Dan White got off on the munder charges using the “Twinkie defense”. 🤬

Shari

If this show doesn't win all the awards, I'm going to be so mad. I also think that Matt Bomer, if he wins anything, will bring Jonathan has his date, maybe. That's my hope anyway, if the people behind the awards actually have the stones to give the actors awards for something like this. There's no Hawk without Tim and vice versa, and Matt and JB seem very aware of that. <3 More thoughts later.

Jamie

The scene where Hawk broke down caused me to break down because I feel like up until then, we didn’t see much emotion out of Hawk so to see him finally break down was heartbreaking.

Carrie

The gay vs homosexual discussion is not unlike the gay vs queer discussion we have now.

DP

Ruskin has just come out an openly gay black civil rights protester, made by the Obama's this year on Netflix

Gina Lipkin

Snot and tears is not a good look. I'm so angry and thankful all at the same time. I've lost a child, I've come out as an oldie to my teenage children. I'm a fucking mess right now 🩷💜💙

Ann-Marie Still

Hawk cut a very lonely figure whilst watching his friends from afar having their vigil on the beach. He's lived a life of lies, deceit and fear borne from the way society would see a man like him and maybe how he sees himself and now that same fear is so ingrained that it holds him back from embracing the ideas and growing freedom the gay rights movement is now offering him. And on top of that, possibly the only man he's ever allowed himself to love has just walked out on him. Great episode.

Pip

In “the” scene even if Hawk is literally in someone else, the moment he shares with Tim afterwards is so much intimate. True vulnerability

Bookshelfaffair

This is the most incredible series - honestly the entire cast and crew deserve all the recognition and awards possible. The writing, the use of timelines/time-jumps, the fact that they highlight these important moments in our history, but also still focus on the complexities of the characters personal lives - just amazing. I'm only watching this with you both, I couldn't watch it by myself, your insights make me feel like I'm part of the conversation about it so thank you for that. I'm going to go and distract myself with your reaction to Bottoms now - I need a break before the FT finale!

Sarah Vallance (Accessible Yoga with Sarah)

It's a terrific series. Highly recommend!

jennifer

This show and Matt Bomer were nominated for Golden Globes. Jonathan Bailey, it's been reported, has submitted his work for Supporting Actor consideration. For some bizarre reason, the Golden Globes has eliminated the supporting actor in a limited series categories from its awards lineup. I fully expect Bailey will be nominated for a Supporting Actor Emmy next spring.

jennifer

Dustin Lance Black also did the series “When We Rise.” It covers exactly this period. Excellent series with a lot of background knowledge on gay and lesbian history.

Ren

Oh yes. I have tea and snacks and I'm settling in for the final two episode reactions. Not sure I'm quite ready for another heaving cry after watching episode 8 the first time but hey ho 😆

Jacqui Chesterton

I stopped right in the middle of my Spanish lesson to watch these!!

Chris Metzger

Awesome!! I have been waiting for these, I've got to get up for work in less than an hour! Thank you so much for these! Have a great holidays!

Chris Mackenzie

OH MY GOOOODDDDDDD

Meral Gattan

Preparing myself...
