OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH S2 E6 - UNCUT

Comments

Love to see you react to but I'm a cheerleader! Such a fan of your videos! x

charlie

I need that Calypso party to happen. ☺️

Sofia

Considering that Ursula took inspiration from Divine (not sure about the other one) and there are definitely homages to Divine in Wee John's look, I'd say absolutely!

Kaci

I'm pretty heartbroken that we aren't going to get a season 3 of OFMD, so thank goodness I have this new video to cheer me up! So many good bits in this episode.

Alvie

Well, no season 3 renewal, sad to say.

Rowan Cannell

So down for a Calypso party 💃

Hannah Howden

Yes to all this! I love how genius this show is. One more little thing - all the pride flags at the market! 🏳️‍🌈

Some fun things about this episode: 1) The kids Ed gives the gold and knives to are played by Taika's real life kids! 2) Wee John is officially Izzy's drag mother. That is a completely true statement I never thought I'd be saying. 3) I love that this show just throws historical accuracy to the wind when it wants to. Ned says he's doing it "for the lols" and Izzy is singing a song that wouldn't even be written for a hundred + years after this scene takes place. And it's all fine. We're not here for historical accuracy. 4) But then sometimes this show just randomly pulls a bit of historical trivia out of nowhere and takes me out at the knees. For example: walking the plank was actually not that common, like movies make it out to be. Very few pirates actually used the practice. That's why Ned even comments on it with surprise, because it just wasn't a common thing. But you know who IS historically known to be one of the few pirates who made people walk the plank? Stede Bonnet. This is what I mean, they sometimes just pull bits of trivia out and it throws me every time because I don't expect that sort of accuracy in this show! 5) I don't know if you caught it, but there's an important moment when Stede has Ed pinned to the wall. He pauses, as if seeking permission. Because in the previous episode, they kissed and Ed stopped them after a moment, saying he wanted to take it slow. So Stede actually checks in with him in this episode before he continues, and Ed gives a little nod to indicate his consent. I love that even in this big romantic moment they took the time to show us something like that! A lot of shows wouldn't. 6) I love the self-acceptance journey Izzy is on this season. It's such an interesting take on the character and I feel like so often when we deal with themes like this in fiction, there's a framing of it around a romantic relationship, like the person must come to love themselves so that they can love someone else. That's not the case here. Izzy's journey is entirely about him. It's lovely to see a queer storyline that is undeniably queer, but also not about romance. It's about him being accepted by his community (the crew) and learning to be part of it. Love that for him!

Kaci

I actually thought that you had turned your volume up😅. Does anyone else think that Wee Johnin Drag looks like Mitzi Del Bra (Hugo Weaving) in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of The Desert, or Ursula from The Little Mermaid?

Chris Mackenzie

That work thing sure gets in the way at times doesn’t it?!

Diane Furlong

Not a problem. All it did was force me to do work while at work instead of watching this. Lol The clarity was just fine, and Alex's shrieking was held in check. Lol jk

Chris Metzger

Noted, sorry about that, experimenting currently with equalisers, condensers and noise reduction to just clear it up and give all your lovely ears a better time at dealing with Alex's shrill tones lol but will bring the levels up going forward, hopefully it was a little clearer that previous ones though?

A Story Worth Telling

Okay, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I tried to watch at work today (shhh, don't tell anyone) but I could hardly hear it.

Chris Metzger

I thought the volume was a tad low as well

Diane Furlong

Firstly, Alex, that's quite a beard you're growing. I just started growing mine out again as well, but mine has gone prematurely grey, so I've decided to start dyeing it so I won't look quite so old. Anyway, this was a really fun episode. The party was so fun and queer. Who knew Izzy could sing so well?! On a different topic, was the volume a little low on this one, or was it just me?

Chris Metzger

Another wild episode from our favorite pirates. Thanks Alex and Josh!

Diane Furlong

Oh this will be fun to watch this evening after dinner

Diane Furlong

I am also planning a Calypso party in my head :)

Michaela Morávková

Out of curiosity, did you know that all episodes of season 2 have after-credit scenes?

Viola.S1

the kids that he gave the knives and money to are Taika's actual children. I agree that this is an episode about sex/kink because Izzy confirms that he is turned on by pain. It explains so much about his relationship with Blackbeard.

Rosie Dickinson

Perfect timing! Just got caught up on the movies you posted over the holidays. This is a stellar episode and major props to Con O'Neill (Izzy) especially. I think it would have been out of character for this show to not do fade-to-black for Stede & Ed. And... I'm backing Alex on the history/records. We actually don't know very much at all about either Blackbeard or Stede. There isn't even agreement on Blackbeard's real name or place of birth, and we definitely don't know why they chose to sail together. Lots of room for speculation!

Rowan Cannell

Oh, thank you! Tusen takk!!I've been waiting for U guys to continue so this is much appreciated 😘
