PRIDE 2014 FILM RE-REACTION - PATREON EXCLUSIVE

Comments

Argh I'm crying my eyes out. As a straight woman living in Germany I don't know nothing and I am so glad you are showing all these wonderful examples of where history was done in a great way. Thank you!

Maria Rausch

Just getting to watch this. It’s good to have that scene where the brick was thrown through the window followed by fire works. These types of incidents were common place when I was a young queer man, still are. In SF during the late 70’s two Polk Street apartment buildings were fire bombed because we were a thriving gay neighborhood, the first full on gayborhood in the City. We would have roving bands of young suburban kids coming in creating disturbances not just one on one assaults. In my younger years before i moved to the City I experienced a sniper shooting at us from the roof of an adjacent building as we came out of the gay bar and the police did nothing. It is always so important that we not lose sight of the reality we lived in, and live in. These types of attacks still happen: Pulse in 2017, Club Q in 2022, Bar-Noar in Tel Aviv 2009; Rash in Brooklyn in 2022. We must never forget!!

Stephen Bertram

Thank you so much for this! What a wonderful and powerful movie and true-life story I had no idea about! I simply have a thought I want to share, about your comments on parental support. I've always been an ally. Even growing up in the 90s in suburban Quebec, I was taught very early on that queerness (although it wasn't called that at the time) is nothing to be ashamed of, and is a part of life and humanity (and animal kingdom, but that’s a different post lol). It's when I got older, by watching movies, reading, and seeing things on the internet, that I learned about all the hate, fear, phobia, etc. and I felt appalled. Today, I'm a mom to 8-year-old twin girls and I don't know yet who they will love, but I've always told them that they can love whomever they choose and they can even choose no one, as long as it’s their choice and that they’re happy. And I know in my heart that I'll love, accept and support them no matter what. I'll fight by their side if I have to, and if I don't have to for them specifically, then we'll still fight as allies. And of course, I want my daughters’ (and everybody’s) safety, but we live in a scary and dangerous world, oftentimes, unfortunately. But I also want my daughters to have a happy life and as scared as parents are for their children’s safety, I personally wouldn’t be comfortable asking my girls to live a life as anyone other than their true selves.

Valerie Duval

It is one of my all-time favorite LGBTQ movies.

John Dillon

btw lesbian in welsh is lesbiaidd 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Megan

Totally unrelated but is the woman who plays Sian also the woman who plays the crazy stalker in Baby Reindeer? Also, the soundtrack to this movie is perfection

Shari

On a new journey as a Pride volunteer

Gina Lipkin

I trained to be a 'buddy' with the Terence Higgins Trust during the Aids crisis to support people with Aids or Hiv and I volunteered with the Albert Kennedy Trust to work as a 'befriender' for homeless LGBTQ+ young people, a young person wrote an article about our story we had photoshoots and a centre spread, I miss those connections

Gina Lipkin

Very heart hitting, so passionately and authentically and lovingly portrayed, incredible story, thank you for presenting this favourite film again, always remember the miners and the lesbian and gays who united together x

Gina Lipkin

I remember watching this film years ago and I absolutely loved it, still do. I cried then and I cried too this time rewatching it with the two of you. 🤝 Bill Nighy was absolutely incredible in this. And Andrew Scott slayed as he always does.

Sofia

I have 2 films downloaded on my phone. Both are british feelgood and both plays out in the 80s and is based on true stories. This is one of them, I can watch it over and over! And also Blinded by the lights.

Charlotte

I love this film so much, I spent nearly 9 hours on public transit to see it twice in theatres. It only aired at a tiny indie cinema that was nearly 4.5 hours away from my apartment roundtrip. I own the DVD. Such a brilliant movie, and a really touching story. More people need to watch it. And fuck Margaret Thatcher.

Mandi Mateer

Thank you for re-watching! First time seeing it, loved it. Was in tears at the end

beacan

omg so sorry!!❤️ new to the patreon😭

Jazz

Hey, the guys pinned a post asking us not to request things here, but please hop over to discord where there's a whole thread of recommendations you can add to :)

Suze

Yes probably!

Susanne

This is my first time seeing this movie or hearing about this event. This is a great story, and it really captures the era. My first Pride was in 1985 when I was 19. Thank you for sharing this!

TJ

The actress that plays Sian just came out publicly as a 'big old gay'.

Rosie Dickinson

This might be Striking With Pride that’s on Sky Documentaries just now

David Watt

Alex is right. The 'L' comes first as a thank you to the lesbian community for all the support during the AIDS crisis and to show we are as important to the community. Before it was GLB (gay lesbians and bisexuals). Also the first lesbian flag (the purple one) was made by a gay man for the same reason.

Bex Kyde

Love this film! So happy you’re doing your ‘modern day’ reactions 😂😂 LOVE that it’s over 2 hours long haha and you all have to watch Striking With Pride - it’s on Sky Documentaries and it’s this story - with the original people involved.

David Watt

It was recently announced that there is a documentary in the making about this. The real life Sian, Mike and Jonathan (yes, he is still alive and well!) will be in it 😊

Susanne

This is such a great film. I am looking forward to seeing it again with you guys. Thanks in advance! 👏🏼🥰

Ruth May

Love this film, thanks for rewatching! Regarding your question about why they chose to support the miner's strike considering all the other causes rife at the time in the LGBTIQ+ community - well I think the ending answers that. Mark Ashton was a member of the Communist party and quite politically shrewd, here's a quote from one of his friends in a Guardian article about the film: "People were sick and dying and nothing was being done about it. In the film we're depicted as good, fluffy people supporting the miners but there was a clear strategy on Mark's part to align himself with the labour movement in order to get gay politics, sexual liberation, HIV and Aids treatment on to the political agenda." https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/sep/21/mark-ashton-gay-pride-film Definitely a matter of big picture thinking and building solidarity with a key union to gain their support in enshrining gay rights into the Labour party manifesto. Win-win really.

Tara

yal PLEASE watch challengers

Jazz

The US DVD cover removing any and all reference to being gay still blows my mind. All of the text referred to the plight of the miners during the strike. Like... who was that supposed to benefit? People who don't like the queer community—and I guess love the mining community? lol—are going to hate the movie within the first minute. Then, it just ended up pissing off the queer community so a ton of people didn't bother buying it and got it from... less legal means.

Taken For Pomegranted

And Andrew Scott is also in that movie.

Chris Mackenzie

Oh I'm so excited to rewatch this with you! It's one of my favourite movies ever with added bonus of Andrew Scott.

A Story Worth Telling

One of my alltime favorite movies. Such a great movie; fun, feelgood, important. It has one of my favorite movie quotes ever: "I hope you appriciate him, because there is a whole Village in Wales who thinks he's a hero."
