To answer your energy absorption question you have already seen that. Not in Dragonball yet but in abridged. Android 19 and 20(Dr Gero) had that ability to charge themselves up by absorbing Ki attacks that were thrown at them. I also think the Gohan reveal was a bigger surprise before a lot was known about the afterlife, this was the first time anyone with a halo was shown so is probably a lot easier to figure out due to watching abridged first. A fun fact I like, in at least one of the DBZ games there's a what if scenario you can play though where you can beat Freeza as Spike The Devil Man. I think the devilmight beam does a few bars of HP to anyone hit freeza with it twice and you win the fight. The Son family are probably the few characters immune to the attack.
