About the potentially world destroying quest; remember, the Aincrad arc ended with the world destroying itself because that's a function Kayaba programmed into the cardinal system and its trigger was probably a pass/fail check where either Kayaba died, or everyone else did. (edit) Also, the reason they were paralyzed in the fight was the ending lag for sword skills, since they are powerful there's a window where you can get punished.
