The reason why most black people in America are called African-Americans is because their ancestors were shipped to America to be slaves to the White-Americans after they stoled the land for the natives. Latin-Americans, Asian-Americans...... If your family was born in a different country and you was born in America then you will be called (.......)-American. America is full of immigrants.

I have the thickest southern accent you can imagine & it’s abundantly clear from the slang I use, the knowledge of the country, the history, geography, laws & customs that I grew up here & people STILL always ask me eventually “no , but where are you REALLY from”. I’m Mexican or Indian, Hawaiian, Filipino, Native American maybe (none of those are actually my ethnicity lol) but not just plain ol’ American.

It also was used as a way to exclude them from being known as Americans. During the civil rights movement activists push for a more inclusive and less offensive term. “African” speaks on their heritage and “American” speaks on their identity as American born.
