what people still fail to realize is Joy wasn’t the bad guy per say but overprotective n the movie was trynna tell us…there’s sadness in every emotion we feel…sometimes the sadness can be so strong we won’t even realize we sad & mad or sad & happy there’s multiple ways

She is too controlling and overbearing & she acts like she is the only important and valid emotion, she looks down on the other emotions and treats Sadness like crap. As for Sadness changing the "joyful" memories to sad ones, that kind of has to happen, Riley has to embrace the sadness of moving and leaving behind everything she loved at their old home. Being joyful all the time and suppressing all of your other emotions is NOT healthy, but the villain Joy acts like Riley should always be happy and joyful and all of her core memories that make up her main personality should only reflect Joy? that is stupid and selfish! Allow me to explain the ending, as a person who has battled depression my whole life, I interpret the panel going black as Riley fully entering an emotionally numbing depression, and generally the only way to get it is to start by allowing yourself to feel sad, which then opens you up to other emotions later. That is why in that moment while Riley is on the bus and depressed, and the control panel will not work for the other emotions, she needs Sadness.
