Unlike bacteria, which you can treat and cure with antibiotics, a virus is not a living thing and thus cannot be "killed" or treated with antibiotics. A virus uses your own cells to replicate itself, thus destroying your cells in the process. Once a virus infects the host, it cannot be cured. Your immune system must fight the virus off on its own, and if your immune system is not successful, you will die. Vaccines usually contain a weak version of a virus, which is injected into you so that your immune system can learn about a specific virus and figure out how to fight it before coming into contact with the real virus at full strength. Vaccines will do absolutely nothing for you if you are already infected with a virus, so you need to get the vaccine before you are infected. The downside about vaccines is that they usually can only treat a specific strain of a virus. That is why it is so hard to make a vaccine for the cold virus or flu virus. The cold and flu are mutating constantly, and thus, a new strain always pops up after we have created vaccines for the existing strains. Viruses can only mutate by infecting a host. In order to cure a virus completely you have to create a vaccine for all existing strains and vaccinate everyone so that nobody else can be infected. From what I understood in the movie, the virus that is depicted is a mutated strain of the rabies virus. Rabies attacks the brain, destroying your brain cells, this causes the host to become violent and attack others. People and animals infected with rabies tend to scratch and bite others, transferring the virus through infected saliva. However, rabies usually takes months to manifest symptoms and thus, is nothing like the mutated strain in the movie, which manifests fully in 12 seconds. TLDR; vaccines can stop the spread of a virus but cannot cure those already infected. I don't think will read this, but I thought I would post this here in case anyone was interested.

A weakened or dead strain of the virus is injected in order to prompt the body to respond with the correct antibodies. We already have the information for the antibodies for every illness in the world in our dna. When we get infected it takes the body time to scan and identify an illness then respond with the right antibodies. In the time it takes for your body to recognize and synthesize the right antibodies the illness causes damage and depending on the illness could kill you before your body has a chance to fight back. The vaccine basically gives your body a chance to recognize the infection so that in the event of a true infection (not a weakened/dead vaccine strain) your body already knows what antibodies are needed and can deploy the stored ones right away as well as make more without the whole scan and identify process. The second kind of vaccine functions the same but instead of injecting a dead/weakened strain its mrna. mrna is biological code that tells your cells to do stuff. the mrna makes a few cells grow a protein that resembles the virus its designed to protect against allowing your immune system to scan it and do the same process of storing antibodies.
