I really hate Katara, and this is the #1 reason: Aang has come face to face with the realization that his entire people were genocide and he is literally the last of his people and Katara's response (the same she has for everyone experiencing more severe trauma) is to equate the loss of her mother to his pain. Not to say that loosing her mom, especially at the young age she was, is terribly traumatic, but she compares her loss to everyone else's pain in a way that makes it seem she not only thinks its equal, but that her pain was worse, and to make it all about her.
