Scott is written as quite immature, which plays well with him being a teenager, and I imagine the "I have homework" was one of those things you just say as an excuse, throwing everything at the wall in the hope that something sticks. Stiles has his own teen immaturity as well, but he definitely takes this whole situation quite seriously, as he should. We saw the difference right from the beginning, when Stiles -- with only hints and suspicions at the time -- spent hours researching lycanthropy for vital information, while Scott just decided to keep playing with the new powers and ignoring all warnings. It can be frustrating watching Scott be an idiot, but I honestly think he was written deliberately to be that immature, so that we have that contrast with Stiles, as well as the contrast with the slow building of terror that Jackson is now going through while Scott merrily skips school and macks on his girlfriend like he hasn't a care in the world. We also have Derek going through his own emotional trauma, and cut to upbeat music and Scott prancing about the woods with Allison. I really does seem deliberate writing, and if that's the case, it's rather brilliant. Scott isn't the hero or MVP of this piece, or at least that's how it feels to me right now. I've no idea if that changes later on, or if Scott is going to continue being a doofus.

If you didn't turn in your homework for a grade, it counted as an incomplete or a failure, depending on the structure of the class. Homework is a scam. Even now as an adult, I'm resentful that kids don't get the clear division between home and school, which follows them into adulthood and often unable to maintain boundaries between work and home. If they spend several hours in school, THAT is what should matter, and they shouldn't have to spend their very few precious hours at home wrestling with homework. They should be able to play and have time with family and friends and not have to sacrifice that and only have it on weekends and school breaks. It's b.s. It's why people have such a hard time realizing later on that their job doesn't have to be their whole life and identity. sorry, rant over now
