I'm thinking Danny figured it out after the whole Jackson ordeal? Maybe he looked up the history of the town at that point, because I think I recall Deaton saying it had been a beacon to supernatural creatures in the past, and would be again. So maybe there was enough weirdness going on that Danny figured it out, especially if he wasn't a skeptic anyway. That's the explanation I came up with, anyway.
