In most vampire lore, the older the vampire, the stronger the vampire. I actually can't think of any vampire lore (books, movies, roleplaying games, TV shows, folklore) where that isn't true. We see the strength difference between Damon drinking blood and Stefan not drinking blood, but they're the same age, so that's an obvious power difference. We also see that Lexi (about 400 years old) didn't deny herself human blood, and she was stronger than Damon, which is why he had to use trickery to kill her. But looking this episode at Katherine, denied blood, she is clearly much weaker despite being about 500 years old. From that, we can surmise that while it's factually true that a vampire becomes more powerful the older they get, the consumption and denial of human blood plays a factor.

fun fact in the books that this show is based on katherine is german but the actress for elena and katherine (nina dobrev) is actually bulgarian so they changed it.
