My Little Pony: Equestria Girls Review

This film was an experience. It’s such a riveting and unexpected surprise that even by the end of the film you are not sure what your eyes and brain was exposed to. This could be inventive or cursed for many as the ponies we know and love become human. They enter a world filled with teenage drama of popularity and fitting in which is a brilliant way to bring back the initial pilot episode structure. There’s constant references and fan service of the entire S1-3 littered throughout which adds some nostalgic touches. Also, the music must be complimented as it was just so immaculate and well done. The most polarizing aspect are the human designs: they are hit or miss and I can’t help but prefer the original character pony design. Surprisingly, as the film goes on the outfits and hairstyles make the human forms stunning and clean. But now did it get here? By Princess Celestia’s former rebellious and talented student Sunset Shimmer. Her design, backstory, and personality was incredible and had me captivated. The film then goes into some tropes of high school, romance, generosity, and constant switches between these genres and developments until we get to a final supernatural-friendship-extravaganza which can make the third act seem too messy and inserted.

Even as I write this I am still unsure of how I truly feel about this film. I must commend it for pushing the envelope and taking such a drastic pivot with its direction. To place the ponies in human forms and in high school was surely a max scientist move. On the other hand I feel there was this awkwardness to it while also having just an unorthodox off feeling to the usual identity and tone that we have come to know and love. I think I will always be appreciative but conflicted with this film which I can’t say I’ve felt about a film before. All I can say is that it was definitely entertaining. 6.5-7.8/10

Yeah its truly difficult to get used to... Sunset was indeed an interesting Character and the overall premise was unexpected. - It definitely had its flaws, but entertainingwise it was great. - If this movie stood on its own it wouldn't have done much for me, but all the others (better) EQG movies and specials made it so much better... that's why i view it as an introduction to the EQG-Franchise. :)
