CMC are hit or miss and this one HIT! You said it perfectly as her growth and journey with fear and dreams was much needed and perfect. And it’s also a development I’ve questioned heavily so I’m glad we have gotten more cutie mark insight.
And then Luna. Of course. Coming into the fray and saving and analyzing the day!!
I just think for myself the interconnected dreams was a bit of “too on the nose” ending but I felt this was much better explained and shown in a future episode 😉
Man… if that starlight story connected with this, I would have lost my fucking mind 😂🤯🤯
But the message is absolutely wonderful and has so many layers and real life applications.
Wonderful stuff!!!

In "Bloom & Gloom", Apple Bloom is anxious about getting her cutie mark, worrying about what it will mean for her future and if it will align with her friends and family. Her anxieties manifest in a series of clusterfuck dreams, each become more unsettling than the lastone, reflecting her fears of getting a cutie mark that would alienate her from her loved ones. Luckily Princess Luna appears in her dreams, helping Apple Bloom to understand that her fears are exaggerated and that she should embrace her true self.
- Some notes/thoughts/facts: -
You don't need to be expressive all the time, sometimes it just doesn't work out and that is ok.
CMC-episodes are often hit or miss, as you said.
Babs Seed got her cutie mark and everyone (in the CMC) loses her mind:
Apple Bloom: "I guess I just spent so much time worryin' about how to get a cutie mark, I never even thought about what would happen after. There's just so many things I never considered."
Apple Bloom works herself into an existential dread and begins to asks the right questions (that came up even in the fandom), which are finally tackled in this episode through a recurrence of dreams:
- What happens after you obtained your cutie mark, especially regarding the CMC-club?
- What if you get a cutie mark that you dislike, which you are stuck forever with?
- What if you are the first to go or the last one to get one?
- What if it's not what you or especially your family expected it to be and even get shunned for?
This got really confusing after a time - a clusterfuck of dreams, as you said. Still the last one was the most disturbing one, they even cut her out of every photo and denying her Apple name!
Anyway, it had to happen sooner or later if your whole young life is about the pursuit of your cutie mark - you could miss out on about other things and even focus on the wrong questions.
The touching little melody of the lullaby Applejack is singing to Apple Bloom was ad-libbed by her VA "Ashleigh Ball" (She is also the VA and singer for Rainbow Dash).
About Babs CMC-cell in Manehattan, I think there was something in the comics about it... but i may be wrong... - still you are right - it would be nice to see a story about her there.
Apple Blooms first cutie mark as a pestpony was interesting, it somehow had a slight Ghostbusters-vibe to it... (i think i read about how even the equipment was inspired by it) and the Twittermites are pretty devastating if not contained, they are able to get whole towns destroyed... - Btw. with that the barn got destroyed the fifth time in the entirety of the series until now.
Finally another appearance of LUNAAA!!!! - HECK YEAH!
- Now everyone had a Dream-Therapy from Luna in their dreams!
Luna says it was Apple Bloom's own shadow (called "Shadow Bloom" by fans)... but as you you also thought at the beginning, there was a theory amongst fans, about how it might have been Starlight that came into Apple Bloom's dream to plant all these seeds of doubt into Apple blooms mind, disguised as this shadowy figure that is playing around with her fears. And maybe there is still more at play than meets the eye..? 🤔 - Just let me say this: Keep your eyes glued to the screen... 😀
Anyway, Luna has some wise words about Apple Bloom's fears and is able to get the message across that if you like yourself for who you are it shouldn't be dependable about how others think about it.
But Apple Bloom isn't alone with her fears, her friends have them too. - I found the CMC-meeting in the dreamworld as a nice little concluding interlude which also contains more screentime with Luna... - What was so bad about that? 😅
Additionally, there seems to be a misconception about how the connected dreams work. All we have seen is that Luna connected them together via a passageways of doors. I'd love to explain more, but doing so would give away too much. 😅
Princess Luna: "It's been a busy night for us all, but I think it's time to bring it to a close." - this makes me wonder how many dreamtherapy's she is providing each and every night? - Way to many i presume...
---
This concludes this clusterfuck of an episode which was full of inception-like dreams and a wild range of what-ifs and cutie marks. It's exploration of identity, fears, and special talents resonated with many viewers because it addressed the very core problem that most people have in their life and that not just once.
Most fans liked this episode for the narrative's subtlety and the character development of Apple Bloom, especially in relation to her interactions with Luna, which was a notable highlight.
But there is also much Speculation about how "Shadow Bloom" could be connected to Starlight Glimmer which would have made perfectly sense and would have been an interesting twist if it was revealed here.
Overall it was a great episode with an interesting story and great execution. We got to see Luna as a dream-therapist again - helping the CMC out. I like this episode very much, but to think that you will rate this episode as your most favorite one in this season... well, you ARE indeed in for a quite the treat :D
Another great reaction, it was good to see you reacting nearly the way as i was reacting to this 😅 - Thank you! 💙

A confusing yet beautiful episode!! Right on as you said. The relatability is for everyone and it demonstrates it by showing all of AB’s fears.
And LUNA!!!!!! I’m sorry I can’t hide my excitement and need for her. Our dream therapy princess. Expected but it goes by her rule of people needing to know their fears and the truth.
I did but you’re right that it’s sort of her intended purpose. Again it wasn’t a huge demerit on it but I think more on it after your comment and I can easily not see it as such a bad thing.
Man…I don’t think it was intended but that starlight red herring. Maaaaaan. I was about to explode 😂😂. That would’ve been the sneakiest and most well crafted writing but I still love it representing herself which is too damn true.
And yes!! She did! In my mind I thought that but I dont think I said it. All the CMC going through big developments at the hand of Luna. It’s a fantastic.
Beautiful beautiful episode 😭. Crazy to say I like this more than the already amazing Starlight special?

What an incredible episode, I love this episode, very inception like episode, it’s super relatable because we all have these fears even as adults finding your purpose and finding yourself is so hard and challenging so it manifests in dreams and you feel trapped in a nightmare, also everyone thought she had gotten her cutie mark at first the pest pony mark, they tricked us lol also yes the voice I did think of starlight and a lot of people thought it was her too, finding out it was herself made sense cause she was worried about all these things, Luna returns! I was so glad to see her it was amazing, I love her, also If you think about she’s went into all 3 crusaders dreams! and you said you didn’t like how the dreams were connected ? I think that’s how Lunas power works she connected their dreams so she could have them all meet up in one dream
