Man, I love accountability and magnifying on those minor moments. Gives me Bojack vibes.
How this was such an afterthought and then managed to be one of the most unintentionally painful moments that twilight the princess of friendship caused was brilliant. I agree the raw emotions of how downtrodden moondancer expressed herself was too damn real.
And then the foil, reality, and path of how this could have easily been twilight honest and very likely to happened to anyone.
Oh yeah that realization has to be a top reaction moment for me easy 😂. I was blown away

And here we are, on one of the saddest episodes of MLP, "Amending Fences"...
(Again one by M.A. Larson)
- Some notes/thoughts/facts: -
Spike: "It's kinda funny, isn't it? All these ponies comin' to you for advice about friendship?"
Twilight Sparkle: "What's funny about that?"
Spike: "You know, 'cause you used to be famous for being such a bad friend."
- WOW... would have never thought to hear it like that (the first time i watched it) - it was completely unexpected that this topic would be brought up again, it was always on my mind before, the question about the ponies that were seen in the beginning of of the series: Minuette, Twinkleshine, Lemon Hearts, Lyra Heartstrings, and the brought up Moon Dancer...
Spike: "Aw. Me and my big mouth."
As always Spike... as always 😅
Twilight Sparkle: "Before I left Canterlot, I didn't really appreciate my friends. And that's because I didn't know how important friendship was. But I've learned so much since I moved to Ponyville. I learned what it means to be a good friend and that I certainly wasn't one to the three of you. So for all the pain I caused you, I am truly sorry."
Twinkleshine, Minuette and Lemon Hearts: "[giggling]"
Minuette: "Oh, come on, Twilight! Sure, it might've stung a little bit when you ran off to Ponyville without saying goodbye, but it's not like we weren't used to that from you!"
- You are right about that, its in no way a compliment and i think that the way they said it was intended to be a hint.
Twinkleshine: "Yeah, we didn't take it personally."
Lemon Hearts: "But it's really good to see you now."
- At least its something that they didn't took much to heart.
The short "blast to the past" flashback from the school was kinda interesting, it looked like that Twilight and Moon Dancer shared the same interest.
You are right the second Flashback was the beginning of the first episode! - It was such a nice reminiscent moment towards the first series premiere and completely unexpected.
And here we have Moon Dancer, who totally took it to heart that Twilight left.

I dunno why but i loved how Twilight interacts with Moon Dancer here. Its completely out of the box and so typical nerdy. - It had to pique Moon Dancers interest.
Moon Dancer: "[whispering] Whatever! I just need to be alone so I can study without some crazy pony trying to make friends, all right?!"
- Now, where did we hear that before? Yea right, also in the series premiere:
Twilight Sparkle: "I just need to be alone so I can study without a bunch of crazy ponies trying to make friends all the time."
- this even more showed us that Moon Dancer in this episode is kinda the way, Twilight might have turned out if she never had made the trip to Ponyville and meet her friends there. - Always sunken in magic studies, doing nothing else. - But maybe Spike and her Brother would have made a difference..? Well, we may never know...
The moment Moon Dancer broke down and let out all her pent up anger and trauma at the party was something else and unexpected - it kinda got very real and relateable - It was the first time, Twilight completely messed up someone on a fundamental level without any joke or delight behind it - just raw unfiltered emotion. It was very hurtful to watch.
About the picture with Lyra in it, it was mentioned by spike:
Spike: "Um, Moon Dancer? It got kinda banged up, but here's a little something I wanted to give you back at your first party."
Spike was talking about this present in the first episode:

Where besides a teddy bear apparently this picture was in it - He found it again when they were back at Twilights old home.
Spike: "The rest (the picture) of it's still here"

This happened sometime before the first party in the past when they were all were kind a friends.
You can also see, that Twilight had no wings there:

However, it was kinda a shame we didn't got to see Lyra here, but she made quite the appearance in "Slice of Life" before. So its ok by my account.
---
This concludes our episode on the complex challenges of maintaining and establishing new friendships. The heavy atmosphere between Twilight and Moon Dancer made it very intense and unexpected. It even brought me to tears because it was too close to realism as can be.
To write an episode about such a minor detail in the first premiere episode which was just there to establish that Twilight was the kind of pony who didnt care much about friends, was such a stroke of genius - its close to unbelievable.
Anyway, some fans empathized with Twilight's prioritization of a world-threatening crisis to reason this behavior, but abandoning her old friends afterward was undeniably a poor choice 😓. Meanwhile, others saw Moon Dancer's reaction as a legitimate expression of deep-seated hurt. There even was speculation about romantic feelings, that added an intriguing layer, suggesting that Moon Dancer's disappointment was heightened by these unspoken emotions. And if you look at the photo again, there is a possible hint in Moon Dancers direct attention towards Twilight.
Overall, this episode was excellent and well-written, especially in the context of the first premiere episode of MLP. - i loved it.
Thanks for reacting to this - the realization about the reference to the first premiere was hilarious to watch 💙😀
P.S.:
and because you have already seen the finale - there is nothing suspicious going on here... 👀

I love that perspective of Moon dancer being eat twilight could have been. Makes her growth even more substantial and impressive! The difference here is it’s BECAUSE of twilight she’s this way. Very intense and layered accountability episode.
I think that reveal of the first scene might have been one of my best reaction moments. It was so unexpected and brilliant. Ahhhhhh. Pardon my language but this episode was so fucking good. Definitely needed Lyra here in some capacity

This episode made me cry! it was intense, such an amazing episode, one of my favorites in the series! Moon dancer is like twilight used to be and even more not interested in making friends, I think is how twilight could’ve turned out if not for princess celestia sending her to Ponyville to make friends, and I love twilights old friends, at first minuette was being fake or like too nice but I think she’s just really nice and friendly like pinkie, her old friends are very realistic, when they played that first scene again I got chills! just an awesome episode! I do wish Lyra was in this episode besides being in the pic at the end.

Spike's picture was from an earlier meetup, which he wanted to give to her first party.
