Applejack Stuck in Her Ways | My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Season 6 Episode 10 REACTION + Discussion

- Some notes/thoughts/facts: - That's horrible nightmarefuel... https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/4/46/Rarity_with_a_wrinkly_face_S6E10.png Twilight Sparkle: "Applejack, please. If there's a list involved, I am one hundred percent on top of it." 🤣 Never seen Twilight this disheartened over a list 😏 https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/3/32/Twilight_surprised_by_checklist%27s_length_S6E10.png Spike: [reading] "Step one: open the gate." Spike: Okay. [reading] "Step two: close the gate." Spike: [reading] "Step three: walk away." Twilight Sparkle: "Walk away"? - "Really?" - That would confuse the heck out of me... 😅 If you think back to the "Ponyville Confidential" episode, Rainbow Dash never openly admitted to enjoying hooficures or pampered spa treatments. Looks like she's grown to like them now! 😏 https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/0/08/Rainbow_Dash_reading_on_a_spa_couch_S6E10.png - cute tank-slippers 😍 https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/b/b2/Rarity_bumping_into_Caramel_S6E10.png - The faces in this episode are really strong again 🤣 https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/e/e5/Rarity_%22we_only_have_an_hour%22_S6E10.png - Stubborn AJ is stubborn about getting her steam 😅 That little intermission montage with AJ was interesting... https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/b/b6/Applejack_ready_to_save_the_day_S6E10.png - also love her full equipped outfit Twilight Sparkle: "I told you, Spike. We're following Applejack's list to the letter, and Applejack doesn't fly!" - Another stubborn one, but she is also right... Also I love how they referenced the 1996 film "Mission: Impossible" here, complete with a similar-sounding musical score. 🤣 https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/f/f9/Twilight_Sparkle_relieved_to_have_stopped_S6E10.png It's hilarious how AJ is talking about being stuck in routines while literally doing the same thing... peak comedy right there 😅 And yes you are right the pacing in this episode is slower than usual. Why is a pony that behaves like a chicken even more ridiculous!? https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/d/d5/Applejack_clucking_like_a_chicken_S6E10.png - That's way too funny 🤣 The little montage about streamlining AJs habitual routines was neat. The pony you mentioned is "Winter Lotus": - https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/8/86/Winter_Lotus_ID_S5E17.png - https://www.deviantart.com/laszlvfx/art/Winter-Lotus-858344778 And just for reference and because i like them very much: "Lotus Blossom" and "Aloe" https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/8/87/Lotus_Blossom_id_S1E9.png https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/9/96/Aloe_id_S1E20.png - Both are also voiced by Rarity's and Luna's VA Tabitha St. Germain I think this is also a clue as to why I Like Luna, Rarity and these two 😅 I love how it ends with Rainbow getting caught after her spa treatment. She finally admits that she enjoys being pampered and overcomes her reluctance to join Rarity and AJ in the end. --- The plot centers around Applejack's tendency to create unnecessary work for herself. This becomes evident as she complicates tasks both on her farm and during her visit to the spa. Her problem-solving methods often become far more convoluted than needed, leading to inefficiency. Applejack is forced to reflect on her habitual routines and recognize that these overcomplicating things always slowed her down, a lesson that many viewers might find relatable, as people often fall into similar habits of complicating their lives through convoluted routines. The idea that someone as practical as Applejack can still fall into this trap highlights the very human tendency to get stuck in unhelpful habits. The episode's central moral is the value of having someone else, in this case, a friend, provide an outside perspective. Applejack learns that sometimes, a fresh set of eyes can help you see things more clearly, preventing unnecessary steps and wasted effort. This moral is particularly meaningful for individuals who tend to overcomplicate their lives, often without even realizing it. So the contrast you're making between the spa and farm issues misses the point. Applejack is the outsider at the spa, able to diagnose and solve issues the staff miss, while on the farm, Twilight and Rarity help Applejack see the flaws in her routine. The difference between mechanical and process issues isn't the focus; it's about how routine blinds people to inefficiencies. Many fans misunderstood this, thinking the episode makes Applejack look foolish, but it's actually about how even smart people can fall into uncritical habits... Anyway thanks to sjones17515, as he was elaborating it further in-depth in his comment - so I won't go too much into detail here. Still you are also right about Applejack herself. Though typically reliable, hardworking, and often acting as the "mother" figure of the group, she has a stubborn streak that sometimes makes her difficult to understand. While she's usually considerate and kind, Applejack has little patience for rudeness and doesn't hesitate to respond in kind when provoked. She can be more quick-tempered than the rest of her friends, and when her control-freak tendencies come to the surface, she can become overly focused on the wrong tasks. This sometimes leads her to make situations worse before she eventually reflects and corrects her actions. Her character depth adds layers to the episode, showing how even the most grounded individuals can sometimes lose their way. However, another highlight is the evolving friendship between Applejack and Rarity. It's heartening to see how their relationship has grown from merely tolerating each other, as seen in earlier seasons, to now enjoying regular spa dates and helping each other out. Despite their very different personalities, they've developed mutual respect and understanding, which strengthens their bond. Applejack, with her no-nonsense, hardworking nature, contrasts well with Rarity's more refined, glamorous tendencies, but their interactions showcase how their friendship has deepened over time. While I understand Rarity's impatience, she may have taken things a bit too far. On the other hand, AJ's stubbornness actually ended up fixing the spa's issue, so Rarity should be grateful in a way. It worked out for everyone since Rarity and Twilight eventually helped with simplifying the chores, giving them more time for spa visits in the future. In the end, both problems were solved. Meanwhile, Rainbow Dash's brief interaction offered a humorous and intriguing glimpse into her character's development. She becomes more comfortable with things she once dismissed as "froufrou," like spa treatments, which she previously feared would ruin her reputation as the daring, fearless pony she prided herself on being - something she expressed in and before the episode "Ponyville Confidential." However, her hesitation to admit enjoying these activities highlights her ongoing struggle to reconcile the "girly" side of herself with her tomboyish persona. While traits like her pride and insecurity don't disappear overnight, it was refreshing to see her ultimately overcome her reluctance and openly share her softer side with her friends. This character arc also resonated with the fandom, particularly because it touched on the bias against adult male viewers, or "Bronies", who were often criticized for enjoying a show perceived as being for girls. The parallel made Rainbow Dash's story even more relatable, as it echoed the way people often dismiss things without giving them a fair chance by watching or trying it themselves, which is a shame. Overall, I found that the story felt a bit slow in places (as you also noted 😅), particularly during the scenes where Applejack fixes the spa's steam system. This subplot could have been tighter, and the episode might have benefitted from expanding the roles of Twilight and Spike, who had limited screen time. Their side of the story, involving the chores they were tasked with, felt underdeveloped and could have injected more humor and balance into the episode. The episode dragged in spots and lacked the excitement or impactful moments seen in other episodes, but it still managed to provide enjoyable humor and touching friendship dynamics. In the end, while the episode may have struggled with pacing and structure, the core message about simplifying tasks and the importance of outside perspectives, combined with the evolving friendships and humorous moments, made it a pleasant, laid-back watch. The moral was solid, and Rainbow Dash's subtle development added depth, even if the episode didn't hit every mark. - I'm glad you still enjoy the show - and you're amazing as well! 💙

Yes controversial and unexpected it was this episode 😂😂. You’d think it be perfect for RD because it can be like sports therapy and relaxing. I love it for her. And that is true if we see her as a representation of bronies.

Ed

Oh wow really? What range 👏

Ed

This episode is really interesting, and fun to debate about lots of fans did the same thing lol AJ being too stubborn to relax fixed the spa’s problem so rarity should be thankful In a way cause it solved the issue for them too, and at the end they helped her get her chores done so they’d have more time at the spa and more visits, so either way you look at it both issues got solved, also rainbow dash liking the spa secretly is really funny lol I really like that message to it’s okay to like different things in front of your friends like she doesn’t have too hide liking it because it’s her best friends and they would’ve judge her for it because they love it too and they support her, a lot of bronies felt this way like they had to hide their love for mlp because it was seen as girly or not okay for adults to like cartoons, it’s gotten so much better now but when this came out people got bullied and harassed for liking it or just looked at as weird, some people didn’t understand or care to watch the show find out it’s amazing so they judged it and bronies/fans before they even gave it a chance.

the female spa worker is the same voice actress as rarity

Penny

Yes I agree! I like how you worded it saying it’s because the spa was doing exactly what AJ does at the farm which is the main point. Definitely makes me appreciate the episode more but I can see why many people were disconnected from this or not ready for it. And yes many people fall into this vicious cycle so it’s easy to not be self aware of that. Definitely a more difficult episode for younger audiences. A lot of value and ways to look into it since some could also say her stubbornness and lack of quality time could have also played a part but then we wouldn’t have her breakthrough. Thank you! 💙

Ed

The contrast you're making between the spa issue being an actual problem and the farm issue being an issue of non-problems is missing the point. The point is that frequently it takes an outside perspective free of the blindness of routine in order to notice the fact that things could be done better. It emphasizes this point by using Applejack on both sides of this issue. At the spa Applejack represents the outside perspective. While the spa workers are laser focused on the just doing their jobs as they know them, Applejack is able to examine the problem critically with fresh eyes, diagnose the issue, and solve it. Then we go back to the farm and it's Applejack who settles into just doing what she does every time without thinking, while Twilight and Rarity, as outside observers, are able to see the issue with the process and get Applejack to see it as well. The fact that there was a mechanical issue at the spa whereas it's wholly a process issue at the farm isn't really a meaningful difference. In both cases it took an outside observer to notice because the inside folks are just going through the motions of their daily grind. All that being said, I'm glad you at least got the overall message. So many people I've seen online don't. This episode gets a lot of hate from people who think it does Applejack dirty; they claim Applejack isn't stupid enough to not notice these issues with her processes. What these people miss is that it has nothing to do with intelligence. I've worked in corporate America for 20 years. I've seen people as smart as Applejack or smarter get stuck doing processes they don't need to do purely because they've stopped thinking critically about their daily grind ALL the time. I've even been there myself. What happens to Applejack here is REAL. There are actually training classes out there in the business world to help people see and avoid this. I took one once. They literally could have shown this episode in the class and it would have been just as effective as the videos they did show. Sorry for all the rambling. I spend a disproportionately large amount of time defending this episode despite it only being a mid-tier episode purely because I understood it and so many fans don't. The good news is, I've seen a lot less hate for this episode lately than I used to. So either I somehow managed to convince the whole internet I'm right (ha!) or more likely, the fandom is growing up and getting real jobs and are actually learning what I knew going into this episode. I guess if you really had to level a criticism at this episode it would be that it didn't know its audience I guess. Anyway keep up the good work.
