Seems I always foreshadow things 😂
Damn. She’s been slacking. It’s exhausting. Can you blame her? 😅
The classic phrase. So many… ALL of her decisions were awful
It was a good apology
I looove this break down of it. How she still thinks she needs to be powerful and win over twilight and others instead of improving herself and friendship. It even goes to show she still has some of her past just presented different my.
I guess so. I still think it’s taxing to tackle your biggest fear and trauma and they should’ve acknowledged it. I do think you’re right there’s much more work to do since it had been majority of the season since she did anything.
Love the coping mechanism analysis! I agree. And yes! Reminds me of the Christmas episode where she just doesn’t see the value of these things and not at it emotionally or through community.
Great parallel! This was the ep where she needed to write the lesson to celestia, correct?
Yes overall a great episode! Starlight episodes are starting to become my favorite!

Welp... this is an interesting episode... and here we go...
- Some notes/thoughts/facts: -
Its truly great to see Starlight and Twilight together, especially if they are nerding off.
"Remember, she is super powerful, you need to fine-tune things. And not do them evilly" 👀
- Its funny you mention that in the beginning of THIS episode...
"Twilight saying too much studying? What?" - "What" indeed! 😱
Starlight is way too strong with her magic... but its fascinating which magic exists and is possible...
It was the other way around, it was at first Sunburst then Trixie, and Twilight said, that since Trixie, Starlight didn't tackle any Friendship lesson anymore...
Starlight Glimmer: "Nervous, me? [fake laughter] Oh, Spike, you really are hilarious, ha-ha. You think I'm nervous that I'm gonna fail something as simple as baking a cake?"
- yes you are... and I also think youre missing the point...
Starlight Glimmer: "An opportunity to really impress Twilight? [gasps] Great idea, Spike! I'm gonna get right on that! Good talk." - Yeah she absolutely is...
Spike: "And I thought Twilight was the master of the freak-out." 😂
And a freak-out it is... she resorts to magic...
Starlight Glimmer: "[hyperventilating] Okay, Starlight. You've got this. A handful of friendship lessons is nothing compared to the spells you've mastered. [nervous laugh] Maybe if I cast a little spell to help things along... Something simple and safe. Fiducia Compelus... That's not bad. They would barely notice it, but... is it enough? Oh... Maybe Cogeria so they're more... open to suggestion. Oh, or maybe Cogeria combined with Fiducia Compelus! Yes, that could work nicely! Oh, with a hint of Persuadere to be sure it sticks." - There is sooo much wrong in this... "so they're more... open to suggestion" what the hell Starlight!? that's mind control!
You may say it might misplaced, but it isn't, as to why I will tell you in my conclusion.
They do everything to the littlest Detail Starlight is saying... resulting in really hilarious moments.
Several of Applejack's lines refer to various literature and film or famous quotes, which was very funny:
-> "Granny Smith knew she was gonna need a bigger boat" - Jaws
-> "If you can't say anythin' nice about anypony, come sit by me!" - Alice Roosevelt Longworth
-> "She was just a pony standin' in front of another pony askin' him to love her" - Notting Hill
-> "They can take our farm, but they can't take our freedom!" - Braveheart
-> "It was the best of apples, it was the worst of apples" - A Tale of Two Cities
The story behind each of them could have been interesting 😅
You are right... these eyes are frightening. And the responses are really unnerving.

- I wonder what creature that might be, its no Timberwolf 🤔
And chaos ensues... - I thought that was Discords domain 😅
Applejack: "With a whole lot of power comes a heck of a lot of responsibility" (Quote from Spider-Man)
- yeah we all know what the writers did here...
Considering Starlight cast a mind control spell on Twilights friends, Twilight is still kinda calm about it.
Twilight Sparkle: "Starlight, I'm not mad at you, but I am disappointed."
- classic phrasing...
Twilight Sparkle: "Starlight, do you think anypony cares if you can bake a cake?
Starlight Glimmer: But the lesson—
Twilight Sparkle: "Was to get to know Pinkie Pie better by doing something she loves. It was a friendship lesson, not a baking lesson."
- absolutely!
Starlight Glimmer: "I cast the spell because I was nervous about working with you all on the friendship lessons."
Rainbow Dash: "Well, here's a friendship lesson for ya — don't cast spells on your friends!"
Starlight Glimmer: "Believe me, I know. What I did was wrong, and I can't take it back. You're right to be upset, and I hope one day I can make it up to you. But all I can say is... I'm sorry."
- yeah, she is socially disattached and never got to know the social customs, but as Rainbow said: it was a pretty good apology...
And in the end Starlight is doing the lessons at last...
---
Starlight Glimmer's use of magic highlights her immense skill - potentially even surpassing Twilight's abilities. Starlight resorts to using spells, including mind control to complete her friendship lessons, believing this would help her succeed. However, her reliance on magic backfires, leading to unintended chaos and consequences, as she directly manipulates her friends’ actions. It’s a stark reminder of how much power she wields, and one can only imagine the extent of her control if she had used this ability during her reign over Ourtown.
As for your earlier remark, well you are not alone with it: While some might view Starlight’s successful relationships with Trixie and Sunburst as evidence of her progress in friendship, it’s important to note that just forming connections doesn’t necessarily mean she's mastered the art of friendship. Twilight initially supported Starlight as friend out of concern for any further damage time-travel could cause, and later because she saw her potential for growth ih friendship after learning about her past trauma with Sunburst. Starlight's relationship with Trixie also developed gradually, as they bonded over shared experiences as former villains at random at first. With Sunburst, their reunion wasn’t entirely of Starlight’s own doing - Twilight’s guidance and Spike’s persistence played significant roles. While reconnecting with Sunburst helped Starlight heal her foremost trauma, it was largely circumstantial, spurred by the crisis with the Crystal Heart. Without external pressure, she would have stalled it to no avail, which could have prevented their reunion.
Also, Starlight still struggles with many personal issues, including her mindset of needing to impress Twilight and her anxiety over being seen as a disappointment. This stress seems to fuel her reliance on magic, especially after Twilight previously praised her magical abilities. As a result, she starts focusing more on “performing” for Twilight, rather than genuinely engaging in the friendship lessons. Her social anxiety and fear of failure also manifest as a tendency to turn to magic as a coping mechanism, which underscores her difficulty in empathizing with others and navigating social situations.
In the end the resolution comes when Twilight intervenes, helping Starlight understand that friendship can’t be achieved through magical shortcuts. Twilight emphasizes that the lessons are about spending time with her friends, not proving her worth through flashy results. Starlight finally grasps this and delivers a sincere apology, marking a major step forward in her personal growth at this point. Her apology feels heartfelt and genuine, but despite her progress, it’s clear that growth is a continuous process - one that even the Mane 6 still work on and having trouble with, as navigating emotions with reasoning is never easy.
The episode carries several key moral lessons, one of which is the danger of using magic or shortcuts to solve complex problems like friendship. Starlight learns there’s no competition in building relationships, and that true friendships take time and effort. Additionally, while her use of mind control was reckless and selfish, it wasn’t malicious. Although she faces relatively few consequences, her apology is an important step toward redemption.
The episode also draws parallels to previous moments in the series. Twilight, in "Lesson Zero," similarly resorted to a mind-control spell indirectly on her friends, driven by her own anxieties, resulting in an equally chaotic outcome.
From a storytelling perspective, the episode blends humor with chaos, particularly through the antics of the mind-controlled Mane 5 and Applejack’s quirky stories. The comedic tone, while chaotic, mirrors earlier episodes like "Lesson Zero" and "Too Many Pinkie Pies," where emotional breakdowns and out-of-control magic drive the plot. Moreover, the storyline evokes the chaos of Disney’s Fantasia, particularly "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice," where magic spirals out of control due to irresponsible use.
Overall, this episode serves as a key moment in Starlight’s redemption arc, pushing her growth and deepening her understanding of friendship. Her heartfelt apology and the lessons learned reflect her continued progress, and while she still has a long way to go, this episode marks an important step forward.

Your take on this episode was interesting, albeit I had some differences to it I still enjoyed it and it also gave me the opportunity to elaborate on my thoughts about Starlight's growth and redemption. - It was still enjoyable as always - thank you very much! 💙😄

I did appreciate showing her anxiety about it all. And yes she definitely thinks there’s more to do! I just didn’t like her brushing off such a big thing for her

Well said! Yes the repeated progress of it determines how good we are, not just one or two times. And her falling back to old ways is a great point

What I think you missed is that it takes more than just one success to change who you are. They didn't forget about what Starlight has done. It's just that making two friends doesn't necessarily mean you're any good at it. Making friends isn't easy for Starlight. Magic is. It's very easy to fall back into old habits when it feels so much easier.

I loved this episode, it did have a slow start though, lots of funny like the spell hangover lol, I understand your issues with starlights friendship lesson, but I think the reason she’s still messing up at friendship stuff is cause her anxiety, I know she did conquer becoming friends again with sunburst and becoming friends with trixie which was pretty huge a way bigger friendship lesson than this, but twilight thinks she still has more to learn about friendship, if you notice everypony still sometimes struggles at friendship even the mane 6 like sometimes twilight or rainbow dash will have to relearn the same lesson or similar one I think the reason is it’s showing that they even need to be reminded of things at times and the characters haven’t been fully developed yet.
