Celestia and Luna FIGHTING?! | My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Season 7 Episode 10 REACTION + Discussion

We certainly deserve more! However, when it comes to Luna's job, we've already seen more of her role in earlier episodes compared to Celestia’s. That might be part of the reason as well.

I love your breakdown of how this could have easily happened to Celestia. That form was amazing and just Starlight being paranoid but does bring up that she’s susceptible to it as well. But yes the heart of the episode is a deeper dive and look into their relationship and it’s great! Both think each other’s job is a cake walk and it was rough to see both struggle. Of course time constraints comes into play but I felt they gave Luna doing celestia’s role more screen time. Good because we get more Luna but would have liked to see more of the dream duties. And yes the continued reliance on magic for starlight! Great catch! And yes we somehow got the safest outcome of this. This is insanely powerful and if not for this specific situation, this could have been very bad. And that’s sucks to hear that the reception was a bit mixed. I felt we got to see them in a new light and as you said, reveal their flaws and what makes. Plus, when do we ever get non serialized episodes with the princesses? We deserve more! Amazing episode!!

- Some notes/thoughts/facts: - Nice try on your own take on the MLP intro, I thing with some training you will pull it off 👍 https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/5/5b/Twilight_Sparkle_in_complete_shock_S7E10.png - twilight.exe has stopped working 🤣 A friendship problem in the Royal Castle? Spike: "Or, you know, maybe the royal sisters aren't seeing eye-to-eye on something." Twilight Sparkle: "No! That's just crazy! Luna and Celestia would never fight. [beat] Again." - I get MLP Season 1 Premiere chilling vibes here 😱 https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/4/44/Celestia_and_Luna_suddenly_glaring_at_each_other_S7E10.png also https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/7/76/Princess_Luna_looking_away_and_pouting_S7E10.png Now that I see the throne room and think about it, is there only one throne? Where's Luna's? More of Starlight and Luna indeed... its a gift given to us 😏 Wow... I want that! https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/1/15/Twilight_plays_comforting_music_for_Starlight_S7E10.png - I love Twilight's intermissions here 😅 Princess Celestia: "Of course, Starlight! I really enjoy doing it. It's a small way to say I care." - Why does that sound kind of pretentious? Also she isn't dumb, she knows exactly why Starlight is here. I like how different their duties are, which is shown here. Celestia feels unappreciated and frustrated with Luna, who is always exhausted and fails to recognize her efforts. Meanwhile, Luna resents Celestia, who seems to be constantly enjoying herself with dignitaries, without acknowledging Luna's hard work. Their alternating day and night shifts only add to the strain in their relationship. Twilight Sparkle: "[gasps] Sorry. It's just, you said "princesses" and "aren't the best" in the same sentence, and it's making me nervous!" - Her opinion of them is incredibly high, which is somewhat intimidating when you consider that she herself is an alicorn princess. It reminds me of something we get to know about in this day and age - how nerve-wracking it can be when your representative doesn't measure up to your expectations. 🤔😅 https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/8/83/Princess_Luna_%22govern_the_dream_realm%21%22_S7E10.png - Taken moments before a potential war is breaking out Once again, Starlight acted impulsively, relying on magic as her go-to solution when the argument spiraled out of control. After all, she’s the only one capable of pulling off such a feat - except perhaps for that one time in the Season 3 finale when Twilight misfired Starswirl the Bearded’s spell which even altered destinies... https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/4/41/Royal_guards_and_servants_look_at_each_other_S7E10.png - Be afraid, be very afraid! Yeah you are right to be worried 😅 Princess Celestia: "Moon raised! It's even easier than raising the sun. [chuckles] What's next?" - Which is funny... because the moon is much lighter than the sun 😏 Come to think of it, this must be the first time Celestia is gone into the dream-scape... Princess Celestia: "All right. Everypony's asleep. You're talking to yourself, Celestia. Heh. But there's nopony else to talk to! [chuckles] Yet. I can talk to ponies in their dreams!" - This might be the reason why Luna is doing free dream-therapies at night? This could be an explanation 😅 I love that transition, btw! https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/f/f8/Princess_Celestia_observes_Cadance%27s_dream_S7E10.png - Flurry Heart as a DJ? While Cadence is dancing... I wonder whose dream that could be! 😋 https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/7/70/Princess_Celestia_observes_Pinkie_Pie%27s_dream_S7E10.png - Okay... thats one stylish Pinkie riding Gummi... https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/3/31/Princess_Celestia_observes_Applejack%27s_dream_S7E10.png - Wait a minute! Is that AJ as a baby in the arms of her parents? Foreshadowing! 👀😏 https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/d/d2/Dr._Hooves_and_Flim_and_Flam%27s_dream_bubbles_float_near_Celestia_S7E10.png - Dr. Hooves is depicted navigating a hedge maze while evading a statue that's attempting to catch him, a clear nod to the Weeping Angels from the sci-fi TV series Doctor Who. https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/5/58/Derpy%27s_dream_bubble_floats_near_Celestia_S7E10.png - All hail almighty queen Derpy! And lastly Starlight, who is having a nightmare about her impulsive choice to swap the princesses cutie marks Daybreakers design is absolutely great! I love it! https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/7/7c/Daybreaker_%22Luna_can_turn_into_Nightmare_Moon%22_S7E10.png This is out of an imagination of Starlight... Imagine Celestia could really turn into that? Speaking of Nightmare versions, the comics reveal that a foreign entity, known as the Nightmare Forces, manipulated Luna's hatred to transform her into Nightmare Moon, a detail that wasn’t directly depicted in the series. However, this interpretation could still be considered canon if we take into account the response given by the creator, Lauren Faust, when asked about this: https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/7/71/Lauren_Faust_discussing_age_of_Princess_Luna.png - "Some sort of evil magic" could relate to said comic's depiction. https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/a/af/Daybreaker_charges_into_Nightmare_Moon_S7E10.png - So, instead of the premiere, we get to catch up on the fights we missed. 😅 In Princess Luna's nightmare, the fillies sing in eerie voices, reminiscent of the children's haunting chorus in A Nightmare on Elm Street. Celestia then appears in a mirror and drags Luna into it, mirroring the way Freddy Krueger pulls Nancy's mother into a mirror after her death in the 2010 remake. This whole bit about Luna's nightmare about the smiling incident at the fundraiser is absolutely terrifying 😱 https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/9/98/Princess_Luna_surrounded_by_dream_ponies_S7E10.png - Nightmarefuel... "I would like it if they had tackled other dreams" - who wouldn’t want that? But with only 25 minutes per episode, there’s just not enough time to include everything 😅. That said, I think this episode did a great job showcasing what Luna's role is all about. Celestia was primarily overseeing the dreamscape: scanning for nightmares, assisting Starlight by holding them at bay, destroying the one that plagued her, and addressing Starlight's insecurities. This really encapsulates Luna’s typical duties. Plus, we already got to see the Mane 6’s nightmares in S5E13. Still, it would have been cool to see even more examples And finally the princesses are talking it out... recognizing their stressful and hard jobs. Princess Luna: "[laughs] I know that face! They're not. I know you have to be perfect for everypony else, and you do an amazing job. But you don't have to do it for me." - sweet and so cute interaction between Celestia and Luna Starlight gets acknowledgment by the princesses... Starlight Glimmer: "That's a nice way of saying I came dangerously close to messing everything up." - heh 😏 How did Twilight know that its over? Was she spying somehow? https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/5/5e/Twilight_drags_Starlight_back_into_the_castle_S7E10.png - Oh dear, Starlight is about to get interrogated... hard... Princess Luna: "Oh, uh, by the way, there's a field trip you need to make happen and a – ahem – timberwolf issue you need to address." Princess Celestia: "W-What?" Princess Luna: "Oh! Look! There's the sun! Time for me to turn in!" - oh wow... that's sisterly love right there 😅 --- This episode delves deeply into the sibling rivalry between Princess Celestia and Princess Luna, a relationship that hasn't been explored in such depth since the last couple of seasons. The episode brings to light the struggles they face in understanding and appreciating each other's duties. This lack of understanding, if not addressed early on, can lead to serious consequences, as we've seen in their past - where jealousy and anger drove them apart, culminating in a fierce conflict and Luna's banishment to the moon. The episode vividly contrasts their responsibilities. Celestia spends her days attending to dignitaries, participating in meetings about national affairs, and maintaining a forced smile for the sake of public image - an exhausting task, especially with the ever-present scrutiny of the media. Meanwhile, Luna works tirelessly through the night, providing dream therapy and safeguarding the dreamscape from nightmares that, if left unchecked, could spill over into the waking world, affecting the minds of ponies. Despite the high stakes of their roles, neither sister has any margin for error, as a single mistake could lead to disastrous outcomes. While Celestia is constantly in the public eye, unable to rectify her errors due to her hectic schedule, Luna battles the nightmares alone, in solitude. A key lesson of the episode is that even those in high positions, like the princesses, have their own flaws and challenges. The switch in their responsibilities reveals the difficulty and complexity of their respective roles, leading to a newfound understanding and empathy between the two. Starlight Glimmer is summoned by the Cutie Map to resolve the conflict between Celestia and Luna. Interestingly, Starlight's impulsive use of magic - a trait often seen as a flaw - works to everyone's advantage in this situation, as she decides to swap the princesses cutie marks on a whim. While some fans felt this decision diminished the importance of the Mane 6, I actually thought it showcased Starlight's unique abilities, that only she possessed. After all, Starlight had previously demonstrated her power to manipulate cutie marks of every pony in Our Town during the Season 5 premiere, making her uniquely suited to help the princesses understand each other by literally putting them in each other's shoes by swapping their talents. Starlight, however, faces her own fears and anxieties after making said impulsive decision. She experiences a nightmare where Celestia and Luna's alter egos, Daybreaker and Nightmare Moon, appear, representing her fear that the sisters could become permanently estranged or even turn into these nightmarish selves due to their ongoing conflict. This dream sequence, featuring the introduction of Daybreaker as Celestia's darker side, opens up intriguing possibilities as well as the question: Does everypony (especially Alicorn princesses) have the potential to turn this evil? Fans have certainly run with this idea, creating new artworks and fanfictions exploring potential darker sides of most of the characters in the show. The resolution comes when Celestia confronts and "dismisses" both Nightmare Moon and Daybreaker within Starlight's dream. Daybreaker's presence also reveals a deeper layer of Celestia's emotions, as this alter ego suggests that Celestia might have been better off destroying Luna when she became Nightmare Moon rather than banishing her. However, Celestia's refusal to do so underscores her deep love and regret for the years she spent without her sister, reinforcing that she would never willingly turn against Luna. But the episode also hints at the vulnerability that even Celestia could fall prey to dark forces under the right circumstances, just as Luna once did. In the end, the exchange of duties and the encounter with their mirrored nightmare versions lead to reconciliation and a deeper bond between the sisters. The Cutie Map's choice to send Starlight alone proves to be the right one, as her bold decision to swap their cutie marks is what ultimately resolves the conflict. Twilight, while capable in her own right, might not have been able to pull off such a psychologically intense solution due to her complete loyalty to the princesses. She even tried to offer guidance to Starlight by projecting herself on a music box, but her interjections of worrying served more as some ridiculous and silly comic relief, than as useful advice throughout the episode. But another question remains: Should switching the roles of such powerful characters like Celestia and Luna logically have lead to more catastrophic consequences? - What do you think? Overall, the episode received mixed reactions regarding Celestia and Luna’s portrayal. Some fans felt it made the princesses appear childish or out of character, but I believe it's important to remember that everyone has off days - even royalty. I personally enjoyed the deeper exploration of their personalities and struggles. The episode was also filled with humor, tackled an intriguing topic, featured an unexpected dream-battle between alter egos, and offered a feverish whirlwind of events. But, please, that scene with Luna’s teeth... I don't ever want to see that again! 😅 --- Anyhow, thank you again for reacting to this, glad that you enjoyed it 💙

Hey what happened to today's episode? I saw the notification but it's gone

sjones17515

Exciting! We will definitely get to it soon! 😁

Ed

Definitely the best so far this season and one of the best of the season overall. But in my opinion there is one better this season that you haven't seen. I won't say any more than that though

sjones17515

I’m just nitpicking. I would have preferred it but this episode was still amazing. Best of the season so far? 🤔

Ed

I get your point about maybe seeing a few more random dreams before diving into Stsrlight's, but let's not forget these episodes had a set run time and if they put that in they'd have to cut something else, and I'm not sure the tradeoff would be worth it in this case. I think the episode needed everything it got
