Steven Universe Season 2 Review

What a way to follow up the successful season 1! This entire season felt like it was sectioned into its arcs and plot lines which allowed for a seamless flow of events and character disputes. The first part is the aftermath of the jasper and peridot battle where we have the gems gather and clean up parts which also showcases Steven’s growth as he learns more and feels the pressure of being a crystal gem. The next section is a shocking tonal shift as now the show becomes dramatic with the deep rooted Pearl and Garnet fusion situation. This sets in place stonewalling, anger, and a falling out that we haven’t seen before which further shows the ugly sides of Pearl. While the rockiness continues, Peridot is in the mix as they are chasing her throughout the season. Surprisingly she is captured and that shifts the final part of the season to be centered around her as she navigates the gems, Steven, the world around her, her loyalty to yellow Diamond, and empathy. It sets up for the classic fish out of water story for Peridot the way her growth and realistic intent of earth rubs off onto her which shows in her conversation with yellow Diamond. Peridot’s neurotic and unsympathetic personality also allows for a great blend with the entire cast as she brings up uncomfortable situations and more glimpses into gem society.

Overall, Season 2 was a step up in every department from the insightfulness and perspectives of all characters, drama, character conflicts, while still aiming towards the overarching story of Yellow Diamond, Kindergarden, Fusions, the Cluster, and Peridot. It’s such a satisfying season from episode to episode that is constantly delivering great quality. It makes space for the mental states of characters, allows problems to soak in, and resolves it in pleasant ways. Very similar to how I felt about InuYasha so let’s hope it doesn’t go down that route. 8.5-9/10
