My Little Pony Season 7 Review

Season 7 of My Little Pony immediately goes against the status quo as the part one and two season premiere was missing. Instead it becomes a two episode starlight centered friendship lesson. While we do not get the lore and historical narratives, this becomes a welcome reflection and heart-stirring set of episodes that revolve around Starlight’s journey and her continuing overcoming her past. From there we head into a clunky but significant set of episodes as the polarizing inclusions were felt. Stories that we have wondered about from Rainbow Dashes’ parents, Fluttershy’s dream, Flurry Heart’s inclusion, and Applejack’s regression seemed a bit disappointing but contradictory were fitting at points. Then the four episode run from 10-14 might just be some of the boldest and most acclaimed episodes of the series. The princesses get into a fight, one of the greatest love stories transpires alongside it being the most unanswered and asked for plots, and the creators attacking the fandom made such lasting impressions. Besides the miss of Ep23, this would plant the apple-pear seeds for the rest of the season as the topics of Thorax and changelings, Anti Cutie Mark debacle, rarity’s importance, and legendary folklore injected this season with an overarching build up much like in Season 4. The focus on the pony legends made for parallels to our ponies, historical significance to Equestria, and builds into the incredible finale as the pillars are brought back as the empathetic Starlight redirects the decision of banishment to a non confrontational resolution which teaches Stygian, Starlight, and Star Swirl the true meaning of friendship.

Overall, despite some apparent rocky and unflattering episodes, Season 7 oozes of growth and narrative progression which the creators and writers consistently accomplished. This feels much like a season where people forgot about how great the show is and they sharpened their sword and said “Oh that’s how you feel? Alright”. While Season 5 seems to be the bar that every season will have to match up to, this was another fantastic season of MLP and one that also ranks as the second best on my journey. 8.5-9/10
