Pearl and Greg Bury The Hatchet??! | Steven Universe Season 3 Episode 8 REACTION + Discussion

Yeah what a masterpiece musically! Amazing animation to accompany it. We finally tackle this time bomb that has been ticking for the series. Seems both (mainly Pearl) always kept it passive and harbored jealousy and anger. And Greg always getting blamed and mistreated. Yes this show is not subtle 😂 but I’m glad the implications were confirmed even if it was messy. But they finally cleared the air and Steven setting it up just furthers his growth which is has been major this season. Phenomenal and I understand the acclaim this episode has!

This is regarded as one of the best Steven Universe episodes (I think it was even the first episode to win an Emmy award.) by many, many fans. It contains 7 different songs (including reprises), and was a test for the creators in what it’d be like to tell a story through a musical (which they later tackled further with the movie). I think it’s really impressive they were able to fit that many little songs into a 12 minute episode and still be able to tell an effective story. ‘It’s Over, Isn’t It?’ is probably the most famous song from the show - other than Stronger than You from S1 - and Pearl’s VA did so well in the vocal recording that the crew actually re-did all of the animation for that number in order to properly match her performance (which is understandable, considering she was on broadway, as much of this show’s cast was) I love the way this episode really delves into and develops each character. It does such a good job at giving the audience a real look behind the curtain when it comes to Pearl and Rose’s relationship - there’s been plenty of hints/implications, and Steven Universe is not very subtle in general as a show LOL - but I think this is the first time the audience somewhat realizes just how real and impactful this relationship was for the two gems, with the obvious establishment of Pearl’s romantic feelings for Rose. And Steven not only having to navigate this very specific dynamic between Pearl and his dad, in order to bring them together somehow - but also purposely planning it all with that specific intention, and then actually pulling it off. It’s just a great episode that really shows the nuances of the characters’ relationships and how they behave within said relationships in a way that’s still digestible for children. There’s a lot of general subtle foreshadowing, too, which is fun on re-watch. (I love hyper analyzing this kids’ show) I’m glad you liked the episode :) I had fun watching!
