My Little Pony Season 8 Review

My Little Pony Season 8

This season features an interesting plot device with the addition of a friendship school that has the Mane 6 in an educator role. Them having this responsibility didn’t deter them from their usual pony duties and centered episodes. More importantly, the school awakened the “new 6” group which was a highlight of the season as they observe the problems and situations around them while also tackling their own personal obstacles to reinforce their friendship and growth. I admire this identity for the season as it gives us some new direction even after being seven seasons in. It allows for the younger generation to explain their species, to learn from their environment and themselves, and becomes essential and ties into the finale that deals with heavy themes of racism and forgiveness while also giving the new 6 selflessness and an epic sacrifice that is worth graduating much like every pupil in the series thus far.

Unfortunately, this season has many issues that makes this reminiscent of the early seasons. There are: several weaker episodes, lacks consistency and flow of good episodes, characters regressing, and it revisits many lessons we have already been exposed to. With the addition of the weaker finale with Cozy feeling hallow and Tirek losing his menacing aura, it’s the first time when the show feels underwhelming and doesn’t hook you into the next season. Though I do love the addition of the mythical beast habitat, the ponies not having any power, and some more reveals of the tree of harmony.

Overall, S8 is a mixed bag as it lacks consistency with some moments that feels like it’s reverting or getting repetitive. While there are still some underrated moments with Rockhoof, autumn blaze, Spike, CMCs, and the New 6, this season doesn’t compare to the quality that we have seen from previous seasons. With the next season being the final one, I’m feeling excited, nervous, and hesitant all at the same time. 7-6.5/10

You are absolutely right! Can't add anything new to it 😅

Yeah Season 8 definitely had its fair share of problems and I only can say the same as you did here and as sjones already mentioned (and why i wont go into detail here as he already did it for me 😅 - thank you sjones), the focus was a bit off... We will see how season 9 will turn out for you - I bet there will be quite some surprises for you - if these are good or bad, will be another matter 😏

As with anything there are different opinions in the fandom on what the worst season is, but my unscientific observation of the fandom seems to show season 8 as the most commonly named worst season. So while there is a chance you'll like season 9 even less, I'd say the odds are that you like it better. Personally, I think season 8's biggest problem is that it tries to do so many things at once that it lacks a clear direction. They introduced the School of Friendship and the Young Six, but then they also still dealt with the Mane Six, the map missions, the CMC's, Starlight and Trixie, you name it. It's just too much. What they should have done instead is created a spinoff show all about the School of Friendship, with the Young Six as the main characters, with limited focus on other characters, while the main show continued to focus on the Mane 6, CMC's, etc as it always has. Then we'd have the amount of episodes we need for each aspect. As we got it, season 8 tried to do so many different things we didn't get enough of any of it. I won't spoil anything specific, but I will say season 9 definitely doesn't have THAT problem. In fact, it's probably the most focused of the 9 seasons overall.
