Season 3, the rollercoaster. We get the good, bad, the whelmed. We start out with an immediate resolution of the cluster that was built up from Season 2. For it to suddenly be finished and include a spiritual message reminded of how I felt about “The Comet” in Adventure Time which was, deflated. After, this season runs with the idea of every episode including a small bit of the overarching plot with powers, relationships, and the newfound chase for Jasper alongside a more fun tone. Then we enter the “beachisodes” run where the quality goes down tremendously despite some nice moments from Kiki and Stevonnie. I’m not against this focus on the city but this definitely feels like more of the first 10 episodes of the series. From Episode 14 and onwards, this series reaches some of the strongest and darkest story telling with Japser’s toxic and disfigured way of thinking, Bismuth revealing Rose’s motives and how radical they are, Steven and Amethysts fusion, the importance of the Diamonds and the gem’s allegiances, and the continued character development of Steven as he gets a first hand look at how war, killing, Rose, and himself have impacted the gem world. The ending felt a bit too on the nose of discovering him but it is yet another discovery for Steven to learn why this part was kept hidden and one that will still confuse and propel him as the series goes on.
Overall this season is a rollercoaster in the sense that it starts off bumpy, then slowly rises only to go back to neutral position, and to end off with some brilliant story telling that takes the series into fearful and exciting territories. Many great and underrated parts this season alongside some slow and shotty build ups. 7.5-8/10
