When TV became popular in the 1950s, the national average number of kids in a family was around 2.5. So saying having 2.5 kids was a shorthand way of talking about someone living a stereotypical, “normal” life. Just as an FYI, nowadays that figure has dropped to under 2, but I bet tv shows still use the phrase 2.5 kids.
