As Cameron said, the brothers connecting and Dean opening up, is the real story in this episode. It turned out to be good that Sam yelled at Dean, and made Dean understand he didn’t have to deal with things all on his own. Right then, Dean admitted he was being an ass, which I think helped Dean realize he needed to act differently, and led to him sharing his real thoughts with Sam at the end of the episode. Breaks my heart every time. Dean has a super hard shell on the outside, but that’s really to cover up his sensitive side and fears. While most of the time he is either being a hard ass or a smart ass, this is at least the third time we’ve seen him cry. Very true though it is the first time he cried while sharing his emotions. He got misty eyed when calling his father for help in 1x09 Home. Shed a full tear at his dad’s funeral pyre in 2x02, and then again one fat tear here in 2x04. On set, Jensen became known for often shedding what became known as “the OPT” (one perfect tear) in these type of scenes.
