This is the type of episode that is impossible to fully understand while having a fun time watching with a group of friends. It's better enjoyed alone while focusing on the deep character development and philosophies.

2021-04-28 13:12:14 +0000 UTCAnd while I agree that this episode in and of itself is not one of the best, I really appreciate the take that the show has on religion. The idea that "men don't become angels" is something most people don't understand and I'm glad they touched on it. The reason that I do love this episode is the focus on Sam and Dean in relation to their faith or lack of it. Sam's faith is incredibly inspiring with everything that he has gone through and it's a huge part of his character. While Dean is only an almost believer, and I understand. The reason for his lack of faith or deterrence to it is heartbreaking. "Angels are watching over you" gets me every time. Faith and Christianity becomes a big theme in the show and it's important to remember how the boys each view the idea of believing in God. Sam believes because he has to, he needs a savior, he believes he will become evil and so he needs to believe that there is forgiveness. Dean doesn't believe because how could there be a God when all these bad things happen, all his life he's been dragged around hunting monsters, killing things and God has never interfered, never made things better, so if there was a God where the hell was he? This is incredibly important to your understanding of the characters. This is a long journey, don't forget to Always Keep Fighting!

If any of those people told Father Gregory about their deepest darkest secrets or desires he would remember them in the afterlife. He used the confessions of those people to target those who had sinned and were going to sin. The first person killed had murdered someone and buried them in their basement. The second person killed was a predator, a pedophile. And the last person killed was on his way to becoming a rapist and a murderer. Father Gregory knew these people of his church.
