It’s funny because I didn’t put that together with Maribel and Abuela having a similar path during my reaction. Went completely over my head haha. But I usually watch stuff I react to again afterwards, because I’m not having to focus on trying to commentary, and I picked up on that right away. Sometimes reactions really make you miss stuff haha

There is so much symbolism in the movie, entire essays have been written about the symbolism by much smarter people than me. There is golden child/scapegoat child/forgotten child dynamics in the movie. There is also the situation where Isabella and Mariano look exactly like young Abuela and Abuelo, which might explain why there was so much pressure from Abuela for everything to be perfect regarding their engagement and relationship. The situation that forced the family to leave their home, while I don't know a ton of the history, but there was a time where there was extreme violence based on politics, neighbors would literally attack each other, forcing others to flee. And Maribel did have a power, the same power as Abuela. She brought the Casasita for her family through love. And she will be the next matriarch of the family after Abuela.
