Coming over from watching Kipo with you on YouTube- I am SO, so excited that you're doing Steven Universe over here! You're always so analytic with how you muse about stories, and there's definitely a ton of mystery and lore to dig into with this one as it unfolds over the seasons- I can't wait to see what things you start to predict and theorize about! I'm probably gonna chatter a lot in these comments, this is most definitely one of my favorite shows ever and I have a lot of random bits of meta I'd love to drop when they become relevant :D I think one of my favorite things about this episode as an opener is how the storyboarders and the music choices immediately differentiate all of the Crystal Gems. You have differing musical motifs for each Gem... Pearl gets piano, Amethyst gets this sort of kick drum thing, Garnet gets synth, and Steven gets cheery chiptune. You also have all the different ways they're shown to fight... Pearl almost seems like she's doing ballet (and yet she is not against literally snapping the necks of her monster foes- savage), Amethyst is... well, she's kinda half-assing it at times, swinging her whip while paying attention to something else... and Garnet is all about precision and force. And of course, I'm also a fan of how the creators chose to give a young boy a pink shield as a weapon- boys are not often associated with shields (and protection) and the color pink, so it definitely sends a very quick statement about what kind of show this is going to be. (A norm-defying one, in certain ways)
