Steven lore drop: His age is directly related to his state of mind. This really says a LOT about him as a Gem/human hybrid, tbh- I love the bits of hybrid weirdness the show explores with him, and how half the time even the Crystal Gems can't predict half of what he's able to do. It makes a lot of sense after getting the intro to shapeshifting in Cat Fingers, too- even in that case, his form was flipping out because he was scared, and didn't feel he had control over it. I think it just sent him into a negative feedback loop. And here, he was about to fall into the same trap, until the Gems started arguing and he felt as if he needed to scold them (a very adult sentiment) and shifted back to the appropriate age. There's a shot of Garnet literally wiping tears from under her visor, and it really gut punches me to see her so emotional because she's always such a rock. "But a boy on the cusp of manhood can't spend the whole day whackering!" is my favorite getting shit past the radar moment of the whole show, ahahah.
