Ahh, this episode really digs back into the horror vibes, and I love it. I often think Steven Universe is at its best when it's playing around in this genre, and this episode definitely delivered. The very fact that Garnet is otherwise such an unflappable character makes the audience IMMEDIATELY uneasy at the situation in the underground area, seeing her distress and fear. I think that whole scene built the tension really well. Other folks in the comments have already touched on the overarching theme of 'consent' that shows up very often- I really adore how this story has managed to take this oftentimes hush-hushed topic and made discussions about it more accessible to youth through the fantasy lens of fusion. Western society in particular has a bit of a bad habit of not wanting to talk about 'consent' outside the context of sexual matters, but we run into situations of giving/asking consent in literally every aspect of our social lives. It's such an important concept to understand and internalize in every facet of our daily world, and this show does it so beautifully.

2024-01-20 03:12:21 +0000 UTCThe music that plays while Garnet is being grabbed by the fusion experiment is one of the most haunting and affecting pieces of music in the whole show for me. Consent has been a theme that has appeared a few times already in SU around the subject of fusion. We had Kevin harassing Stevonnie when they first fused and not respecting that they said no, which meant that part of their experience as a fusion was really uncomfortable through no fault of their own. We also had Jasper pressuring/coercing Lapis into fusing in the S1 finale. Now we have Homeworld literally digging up shards from destroyed Gems and forcing them to fuse. We know from "Frybo" that Gem shards still have some level of consciousness (that's why the shards in that episode were able to operate the Frybo costume), so we can infer that the Gem shards in the fusion experiments are conscious on some level while they are being forced to fuse. An additional layer to the horror of it all: Garnet claims that the Gem shards are of shattered Crystal Gems (presumably the Crystal Gems suffered more losses in the war than Homeworld did which is how she can assume this). So, uh, those are her fallen comrades and possibly even friends who are being experimented on. Fun!
