STEVEN UNIVERSE 2X22 "The Answer" Full Length Reaction

Here is my full length unedited reaction for Steven Universe! This only includes my reaction and thoughts. There is no intro. I always start my recordings at 00:00:00 of the show to make timecode syncing much easier and the timecode is included. I watch through any recaps (if any) and intros. But it always starts at 00:00:00. Must have your own copy to watch along with, since I can't offer that due to copyright laws. Streamer: Max

Rebecca Sugar and Ian Jones-Quartey revealed in a 2015 interview (which would've come out before this episode, so this is not a spoiler) that there is a writing rule that the SU writers & storyboarders follow for Garnet, which is that she doesn't ask questions. This is to show that "she's sure of everything she says" per Sugar (or, perhaps, you could interpret it as her wanting to appear sure of everything she says, even if she's not actually sure). With the exception of a few technicalities like the occasional rhetorical question, this rule has been followed and Garnet hasn't ever asked a question in the show...until this episode. Flashback cotton-candy-colored Garnet is brimming with questions. It's a very cool writing trick that subtly underlines the difference between Garnet's present-day confidence & leadership role and her past uncertainty & lack of experience.

Fun fact: There exists a legit children's picture book of this episode that Rebecca Sugar wrote! I think it's super neat that this exists, and really do need to get my hands on it soon. The way fusion is presented here is a complete game changer in terms of providing context to Peridot's distaste of Garnet being constantly fused- in the last episode, Peridot seemed confused that Garnet's "not even fighting, she's just- y'know!" as a fusion, and here we see that this is because fusion is usually just used as a means to get stronger and bigger, like the rubies did. They still serve the same function when fused- the ruby fusion is still a soldier- but they're just Lorge. When Sapphire and our Ruby fuse, though... as they state in their song, they made "something entirely new." A Gem formed up of an aristocratic Gem and a lowly soldier, a Gem who can't truly belong to any category. And it would seem as if this is the "problem" Homeworld has with cross-Gem fusion... these fusions don't have established functions within their society, and thus, are "wrong." Your mention of this seeming like a classism issue is right on the money, in my book. As a last little note I am in love with how Pearl's reputation amongst Gems is that she is the "terrifying renegade pearl." Good for her. She's makin' waves out there.
