STEVEN UNIVERSE 3X22 "Earthlings" Full Length Reaction

Jasper logic: Conforming to a strict system that tells you exactly who and what to be, to follow orders without question, and give your life for your authoritarian regime = Freedom Being your own person, discovering your individuality, finding your own friends, making a life for yourself, being who you WANT to be, and living freely = Prison

Diana Cavendish

Jasper was a Great Antagonist, the best one this show ever had in my opinion... ever since "Alone at Sea" we've been slowly but surely discovering small but very interesting bits of her character and psycology. She's not just an Egocentric Warrior from Homeworld like we originally thought in the Season 1 Finale... she is in fact just another victim of circumstances... The fact that she was a Perfect Quartz soldier who came out of a rushed and imperfect Kindergarten must've really put a stigma on her just like Novatinuum said, not only that but the fact that she had start fighting the moment she came out of her Hole was most likely another source of Trauma for her. Just imagine that... to be born and gain consciousness and inmediatly having to fight for your life in a conflict that you barely understand. What i personally love about Jasper is the fact that... even thou we now understand she does have real depth to her psyche... and despite the fact that our heroes went out of their way to try to help her... She still didn't falter and stood firm in her own beliefs, from her point of view Rose Quartz was manipulating Gems who were at their lowest point ans she wasn't about to fall for that. I love it because it is really common in modern cartoons which have themes of love, tolerance and understanding to simply make their villains be swayed by the heroes into changing sides... which is completely fine if done right (like Peridot) but now it happens so often that it becomes kinda annoying (in my opinion), so it made me happy that Jasper who has been the Antagonist this entire time didn't even let Steven get a chance to try to win her over. ! also really like that little moment when Amethyst said "Come here, Sis" while she bubbled Jasper... because she can also understand to an extent where Jasper was coming from. But leaving Jasper aside... we also have new information about the Diamonds! i don't wanna elaborate too much on the subject but i do wanna point out that the existence of Pink Diamond has been hinted several times already in the show, specifically throught the backgrounds. i won't specify on the hints themselves, i wanna give you room to look for them yourself.

Agggghhhh this episode is SO juicy in retrospect. Jasper just seems like a one-dimensional villain up until this point, when we really see her facade crack as she reveals her real motivations. I feel like each gem we encounter has a different way of idolizing the diamonds, and we see how they try to prove themselves over and over (despite the fact that we don't really know for sure if they're even watching).

Ohhhhhh this episode. The sheer hype over the events of this episode back in the day was so euphoric. Literally packed with so much in just eleven minutes. Jasper fans got tons more information on her psyche and where she's coming from- (she's Nasty, but I find her very fascinating to watch as a character because she's clearly intensely damaged from her days in the war and her attachment to the strict customs of Homeworld- she was the one perfect quartz who came from a failure of a Kindergarten, and I have to imagine that is an intense stigma, one she feels she must continuously compensate for) Amethyst fans got such a lovely endcap to this segment of her emotional development, with her beginning to understand that she doesn't have to compare herself to others because her origins don't define her and her path is hers alone, and she's got loved ones at her side to support her through thick and thin... Peridot fans ALSO get a nice endcap to her arc, with her speaking up about what she's learned during her time on Earth thus far, and making huge progress in her newly learned metallokinesis... And then I'd count that awesome new fusion (Smoky Quartz! I love you forever ;w;) as juice for Steven fans, because so many had been waiting to see if he'd ever fuse with one of the Crystal Gems. Such a huge accomplishment for him. Smoky's design is just so friggin cool and unique, too- I love how the animators use their third arm as a pivot point for their weapon's string. And finally, for the fans who are into this show for the lore... this episode, much as you discuss at the end, provides a HUGE amount of intriguing new details that call Rose Quartz and her choices during the rebellion into question. So much juicy stuff here. Fantastic thoughts and musings! Thank you very much for sharing.
