Well i think this is a good time as any to mention this... we still have no idea what's the deal with Lion. We know he's not a Gem because he doesn't have an actual gem on his body like the rest, and also because he's a freakin Lion, a creature from Earth. But he's Pink and has Gem-like Powers. So the fact that we see here that Rose used to hang out with a Pack of normal lions adds more to the mystery.... What exactly is Lion and how does he relate to Rose? You'll have to find out by watching.

I'm also tickled pink by the way this whole episode is framed with the idea of Jamie acting out how Steven and Connie are imagining Buddy while reading this journal. It's just a really cool way to tackle such a narrative, and call back to that play episode in season 2. This is a delightful one to return to, it's fun to get to see a human visit and actually record info about all these mysterious Gem structures- I feel like you've mused before in previous videos on whether humans ever take notice to the Gem weirdness on Earth, so it's a good time to get a lil glimpse at where this actually happens. The Spaceballs reference made me laugh- I will see this scene in no other way now, thank you. XD

2024-05-14 04:21:48 +0000 UTCI don't think I've ever noticed it before, but at around 10:33, when Rose says "for any reader to experience", she sort of breaks the fourth wall and looks out at the audience. Buddy/Jamie then does a couple of double takes like he's trying to figure out who she was talking to. A light breather episode... which of course for Steven Universe means subtle world building and/or lore drops you don't notice or realize the significance of until at least half a season later. 😁 Seriously, rewatch season 1a and you quickly realize how many of those silly, fun early adventures were secretly laying the groundwork for the big moments we got later.
