STEVEN UNIVERSE 4X8 "Gem Harvest" Full Length Reaction

Man that spiel Steven gives to Andy while on the plane. "I want to be your family", UGH MY HEART

The Spider King

This is an episode that works well in its place in the story, but it was not well received on original airing. I'm fairly certain it was intentionally run when it was - November of 2016, just after the very divisive American presidential election and before Thanksgiving - under the assumption that despite the hateful rhetoric that had been ramping up during that campaign season, we'd have our first woman president and a lot of people looking for a way to frame what the relatives they were about have to spend time with had been saying. It was meant to be a healing and reconciliation. Instead, a lot of fans saw it as an attempt to downplay or explain away that rhetoric, with the election so recent. Given time and distance from the current events of the day, is easier to accept as a needed broadening of Steven's universe, but in the moment it felt like salt in some pretty fresh wounds.

I love, love, LOVE this episode, and I adore Uncle Andy as a character addition. I love him because he instantly gives so much more depth to not only Greg and his family situation, but also Steven and his desire to actually know the human side of his family too. Not to mention, it's fun to see a complete outsider react to all the Gem weirdness with zero context. The VA work here was really good stuff. Lots of great vocal energy, ahah. And like, the plane scene at the end messes me up a lot- Because one must remember... Uncle Andy has absolutely NO knowledge that Steven can float. To his perspective, his nephew is literally plunging from the sky to his death. And of course, when Steven gets rescued, the kid is so used to near-death experiences that he tries to play it off as "no big deal," "aw that was a good one" as he usually does to placate the Gems and his dad and keep them from worrying about him, but... Uncle Andy IS worried. He's horrified. "Do you have ANY idea what could've happened to you??" he asks. Steven's rendered speechless. And for the first time maybe ever, he finally has a moment of clarity where he's forced to recognize the underlying truth in that question. What could've happened to him? He literally could've died, and he's just become so desensitized to these sorts of experiences that he's stopped thinking about it. AUGH. I hurt inside. This is one of my favorite little one-line character nuance moments in the whole of the show, I think. I rotate it in my brain all the time.

It's kind of surreal hearing the one and only Carl Brutananadilewski from ATHF on Steven Universe.

Not gonna lie.... even tho i think Season 4 and 5 are not as good as Season 3... i must admit that Gem Harvest has become one of my personal favorite episodes of the whole show. Steven Universe is a show with a very clear Target Audience... the LGBTQ+ Community, so creating a character like Andy DeMayo... an old guy with Conservative beliefs and a strong sense of Tradition.... really seems like the Crewniverse were trying to provoke a very strong reaction in the fandom, they knew this character could end up being very hated. But i love that they took that risk, not only that but they dedicated him the Second double-length episode of the series. And i think it really paid-off, because they not only introduced Andy in this episode... but they made him a very nuanced and layered character as well (something that also happened with Bismuth). The reason i love this episode is because it hits really close to home for me, i also had and still have to deal with family members who are very conservative, and these kind of people tend to be very close-minded too... just like Andy seems at first glance. But i love the fact that the writters decided to Humanize these kind of people through Andy's character, because unfortunetely it is very common nowadays to see people with a progressive philosophy demonizing individuals with conservative beliefs..... forgetting that they are people too. Andy's plight about trying to preserve tradition and keeping the family together really moved me..... in part thanks to the amazing voice performance of Dave Willis, but also because it gave the possible perspective of some of my own family members, how they could be feeling abandoned and left behind. Of course.... this is an animated show.... so even tho Andy was designed to resemble a specific group of people... we also have to realize that reality is often very disappointing. Unlike Andy a lot of conservative people in real life (especially the elderly folk) are too stubborn and too set in their own ways to really acknowledge their mistakes or the parts of their personality that are harmful to others, and we simply have to deal with that fact. Still.... i really love that Steven Universe gave a positive outlook and resolution to this kind of conflict, and that... no matter what.... we always need to try to understand what others are going through.
