Stranger Things | 3x1 Watch-Along REACTION!!

This isn't a spoiler but Nancy told Johnathan about what her parent's marriage is really like in season 1 when they were practicing shooting and it was also mentioned in the car with Steve in S2. Basically Nancy is convinced her parents were never actually in love because Karen was young and Ted (dad) was older and had a stable job so he was the safe choice to go with. Back then it was more normal and even expected for women to just marry a good guy with a stable job even if you don't love him and for the men it was just for you to find a good wife to start a family with. So there was never really that passion or romance in the parents' relationship to begin with which explains Karen's loneliness. On top of that Ted is just...there. They don't go on dates or do couple-y things and Ted doesn't go out of his way to concern himself with anything his kids or wife do. He works and makes money then comes home and eats a warm meal or sleeps. Karen runs the household and raises the kids and revolves her world around them and their family. However that does NOT excuse or make Karen flirting with Billy and even considering starting an affair with him okay. Obviously this marriage isn't ideal and its more of just a partnership but even with that, they still made vows to each other and at least Ted has never broken or thought of breaking those vows. So I'm not excusing Karen's actions but I just wanted to give more insight to the dynamic of their marriage and why she was lonely and more willing to give into temptation.
