The ending as stated in 4x1 takes place in 1979 that's 4 years before season 1. In season 1 November 6th 1983 is when will is taken and when el opens the gate we believe is the first gate. the upside down Is frozen in time for a reason that is still unclear.

Theres a theory that says The Upside Down is like a darkroom hence the black and red. its behavior might resemble film photography too, the way light prints itself on a roll of film creating a negative image where everything is upside down. When a portal is open for long enough, the real world is like printed in the upside down, but I think Hawkins is not evenly printed. Nancy's house is still stuck on the day of Will's Abduction but Eddy's boat is printed next to the water gate the moment the portal opened when Vecna kills the dude in the water. And Eddy's home is also printed next to the gate where the girl died, his matress is there (and his guitar). This theory has a flaw, the gate at the lab stays open until season 2 finale so how does that work are things changing or it's the moment the gate is opened that counts, because 2 season is like a super long exposure.

I think the saddest thing I realized was that Victor Creel was framed intentionally. Dr. Brenner and probably some of his other colleague scientists had recognized that Henry had powers and was killing animals and causing his family to have terrors, but when the Creel massacre happened they still arrested Victor and placed him in jail. I think they did that so as to have a “culprit” found and not worry the general Hawkins population.
