I'm sure they will touch on this more later, but picking up from what the psychiatrist said about Diego needing to play hero + adding that to him always talking about/being obsessed with being a hero, fighting bad guys, and saving lives last season, we can basically infer that Diego probably feels like he needs to be a hero so he can feel like he isn't useless. I think he is still somewhat trying to prove something to their Dad, even though he is long gone. He never truly gained approval from Reginald and even though he hates him he still wanted to be Number One on the team and in his dad's eyes. Even though he calls out Luther for from never moving on/ or having a life outside of the Academy, Diego is still tied to the UA too and has nothing else besides his skills and is trying to prove all those years of training and wasting his childhood were worth it.
