STEVEN UNIVERSE: THE MOVIE Full Length Reaction

Comments

If you want to hear more of Steven's voice the actor Zach Callison has an album called A Picture Perfect Hollywood Heartbreak. It's a bit more "mature" where he sings about his substance abuse problems and relationships but it really shows his range. He truly is a talented person.

Hi✌️

Brixx 02

Ahhh this movie is such much FUN! the music is great, the character interactions are great, the plot is flawed but still good, and the feels..... well, those are always present with this series xddd. Yes, that first musical number with the Diamonds is indeed meant to sound as an old hollywood/broadway musical, which is fitting since 2 of the 3 Voice Actresses of the Diamonds are Broadway Actresses (Patti and Christine). Fun Fact 1: There are videos on youtube that broke down the harmonies of the Diamond's songs in this movie, so if you want you can hear how each of the diamonds sound on their own without the other 2 voices distracting you. i also love the recap of the show using an illustration book, just like the old Disney movies used to do. Steven's Voice actor is Zach Callison (but you probably already figured that out by now xdd), and yes... his natural voice got deeper as the show progressed, since when he started doing his first recordings (back in 2012) he was only 14 years old (which is fun since the only birthday we saw Steven celebrate on the show was also when he turned 14). White, Yellow and Blue Diamond are now like those typical Aunts that always smug you with affection and that you do appreaciate and care for.... but not enough to want to be around them all the time xddd. Oh oh oh.... looks like the Jam Buds are developing some more romantic feelings for each other as they grow older :3 The whole musical number "Happily Ever After" is FILLED with little easter eggs and references to the original show, too many to note here..... except for one...... THAT DAMNED CHEST IN LION'S MANE! That chest was probably one of the biggest mysteries in the original series, the fandom created A LOT of theories as to what could be inside.... but now it is just there.... OPEN and neither Steven nor the rest of the characters even mention it, they developed one of the most anticipated plots of the show OFF-SCREEN and never even cared to do at least a mention of it later. I do get why the Crewuniverse did it.... "not all questions in a story need to be answered" and what not, but still..... it was frustrating to be so invested and looking forward to see the resolution to this mystery... to then being Blue-balled so hard. I love seeing Greg and Pearl hanging out and just being friends, specially after all the hardships they suffered in relation to Rose/Pink. It is also kinda wild to see them like this now and think and they could've possibly ended up as a couple. That's right, this information came out pretty recently (at least to my knowledge)... one of the artists who worked on the show revealed that in the early stages of production of the show Rebecca Sugar had planned that Greg and Pearl would end up together as a Romantic Couple. It's also worth noting that this information came up alongside some drawings that Rebecca did of Greg and Pearl.... spicy drawings to be more specific. Pretty similar situation as to when she still worked on Adventure Time, since she also used to be a Finnceline shipper (she did some sketches of those 2 together too). All of this is even more evidence that Rebecca Sugar is a helpless Shipper just like many of us xdd. Fun Fact 2: if you hear closely in Garnet's part of the "Happily Ever After" song you will notice that her bit has the same key notes as the song "Stronger Than You" from the Season 1 Finale, which is pretty much Garnet's signature song. Ahh that shot of Steven and the Gems running together before the final note of the "Happily Ever After" song brings me such nostalgia, it is an exact recreation of the same shot done in the extended intro of the show, but now with Steven in the lead instead of at the back. And here we go! SPINEL! probably my favorite Gem character besides Pearl. Fun Fact 3: Spinel's voice actress is Sarah Stiles, she's another broadway actress, and (of course) you have heard her before..... she is also the voice of Mimzy in Hazbin Hotel "this is very looney-toons-esque" and "she reminds of a villain in Cuphead"....... well yes, that's correct... since Spinel's design, mannerism and way of moving and morphing is meant to be a homage to the "Rubberhose" style of animation that was really popular and prevalent in the 40's and 50's. And speaking of her animation.... the animators of this movie really went ALL OUT on Spinel's song, and WHAT A SONG, i've always been a sucker for Villain Songs but this one is just Perfect, i love that they chose Electro-swing as the main genre of Spinel's music, it fits perfectly with her old-timey cartoon design. Yes, Pearl singing is amazing, we all know that Deedee Magno Hall does an incredible job voicing her. "Im still on the fence" Lapis you beautiful devil xddd "Oh my stars i've touched it, i could've lost all my character development" HAHA! that was a nice little fourth-wall break, but also really clever since it makes sense that Paridot uses that term... she's a big fan of that zappy show called "Camp Pining Hearts" that Steven also likes. Big Parenthesis here - A lot of people often undermines the song "Who We Are" saying that it's the worst of the movie..... but i couldn't disagree more, i LOVE this song, in part because this is the only time we can hear Bismuth sing, and my god what a singer she is! Uzo Aduba delivered a great and powerful performance, the way she makes her voice a little gritty and raspy on certain parts of the song in conjunction with her iconic Electro-Metal themed music... makes "Who We Are" my favorite song of the movie alongside "Other Friends". Also... this is just a personal interpretation but i like to think that the song "Who We Are" was also partially written as a homage to the LGBTQ+ community. lyrics like "hasn't it always been hard to be us?" or "when you go against the grain, there's always somebody around you can't trust" really fit well with the history of the Queer community and how much it has struggled to get to where we are today. "No Matter What" is such a cute song, my number 3 from of the movie without a doubt. Fun Fact 4: the Tap dancing bits of the song "No Matter What" were recorded by Peridot's voice actress Shelby Rabara, she's a professional Tap dancer and the animators used her as reference to implement those Tap parts in the song. You are right... i also really like both Michaela Dietz (Amethyst) and Kate Miccuci's (Sadie) singing voices but for the opposite reason i like someone like Deedee's (Pearl), while Deedee's voice is graceful, elegant and clean which i love.... Michaela and Kate do bring that raw, gritty and more "real" tone their songs which i also like. Oh yeah.... Steg is definetely a Chad among chads, step aside Rainbow Quartz! we have a new holder for the "Sexiest Fusion" title! Fun Fact 5: Steg is voiced by Ted Leo, he has a band named "The Both" with the only other member of it being Aimee Mann, who coincidentally is also the voice actress of Opal, the fusion of Amethyst and Pearl. So yeah, the Crewuniverse brought these 2 together to sing as characters in the movie. sidenote - this was also a loooooooong time coming, since we (the fandom) hadn't heard Opal speak since her debut, all the way back to the 12th episode of the show "Giant Woman", she did re-appear multiple times throughout the series but the only time she spoke was in her debut episode. Fun Fact 6: if you look closely during the sequence of the song "independent together" where we see all of Pearl's journey through silhouettes you can see that one of the forms that she goes through is the design that she had in the Pilot episode of the show (although i think you still haven't seen that one yet). *Sight* yeah.... remember all those adventures we've had? Steven learning to be a crystal gem, discovering his powers, meeting and befriending Connie, fighting against homeworld.... all those stories we've seen since episode One of the show?........ while all of those things were happening... Spinel was right there, standing still in that Garden after 6.000 years... wondering when Pink might come back. And a couple of years later... she just receives the message that Pink no longer exists and had a whole new life and new friends after she left. It is no wonder why Spinel just..... snapped. few times in cartoons for children i have seen a backstory so tragic. Also the song itself... "Drift Away" it's so heartfelt and powerful too, Sarah Stiles killed it with her performance... incredibly emotional and sad. i suggest you listen to this song a couple more times when you can.... i have the feeling you might have a sort of "musical Deja Vu" at some point later (don't worry, this is not a spoiler). BUT (and this is a big but) i think this song and backstory for Spinel also highlights one of the biggest issues i personally have with Rose being Pink Diamond, and it's that..... in these later stages of the story in seems like the writters of the show (and mostly Rebecca) seem to now use Pink Diamond as a sort of "Narrative Escapegoat", centering several of the biggest plots and conflicts on Pink and going "Pink Diamond did it, but she's dead so we can't really do anything significant about it", so that way they can avoid having an actual villain in the series and therefore avoid confronting the heart of the issues. After all... you can't confront someone who is no longer around. But i digress. Man.... that final fight between Steven and Spinel during the song "Change" was ASTONISHING, the animation was soooo smooth and crisp... this is where you remember that you are watching a full-budget movie xdd. The only other big thing i wanna talk about is the way they decided to resolve the conflict with Spinel.... first of all..... i do like it, but...... you can argue that sending her with the Diamonds might not be the best idea... mental health-wise. The Diamonds have clearly still not completely grasped or accepted the fact that Pink is gone... that's why they wanted to hold on to Steven so badly... because he's the only thing they have left of her. So you might understand why letting Spinel stay with them might be problematic. Notice how they came to earth to stay and live with Steven but once they met with Spinel and saw how much she is like Pink they inmediately changed their minds about staying on earth..... The Diamonds might be happy to take Spinel with them but not because they genuinely want her around... but instead because she might fill the emotional gap that Pink left behind. In short.... The Diamonds might only want Spinel to be a replacement for Pink Diamond. But of course... this is just one interpretation of the whole deal. Overall... i give this Movie an 8/10. Flawed.... but still super enjoyable. This was a great Reaction Mikey (as always), can't wait to see your reaction to SU Future.

Well yes, Rebecca is responsible for there not being a season 6 because she chose the Rupphire wedding over another season. I don't fault her for that decision because Steven Universe was such a groundbreaking show in terms of gay representation. I think what we got was pretty good despite being cut short. I do wonder what we might have had if she wasn't forced to make that decision.

vivian xavier

Small correction (tho i know it probably was just a confusion when typing) Cartoon Network Executives were the ones who cut short the series... not Disney. Althought... with all the information we got about it.... Rebecca could've also been partially responsible for the cancellation of Season 6.

The moment this was posted I checked it out 🙏 But I'm only now writing a comment to point something out: garnet almost always told her sentences in a mater of fact way, but the moment she turned back to her old cotton candy self, all of her sentences were questions. I just find that such a nice detail :]

I genuinely would cut the theoretical "Steven Universe season 6" a thousand times if it could ensure we got this movie and Steven Universe Future, not gonna lie- fun things to come. I am very hype for those reactions, and will probably write some novels in the comments. And this movie in particular is just a constant beaming light of fun, of course! Definitely a comfort film for me, I like watching it to cheer myself up when I need to do something monotonous and dull. Now, it would genuinely take me like... a fifty page essay to discuss every single little interesting nugget of character lore, story beat, and lyric choice in this movie, but I'm gonna kinda... discuss just a shortlist of my favorite little elements in a vague sort of order: _ The intro! I adore how classic Disney-esque it is in its aesthetic. One fun detail I noticed upon many a rewatch is that there's a visual tell in this intro that there's about to be a timeskip... one of the shots is of a highly stylized Earth making two rotations around the sun, which is about how many years have passed since the final episode of the original show. _ Yellow Pearl saying "your time is up anyways" to the Diamonds and then pulling their camera away and turning off their lil setup is very charming to me, especially when one notes that the screen fades to a little logo with Yellow Pearl and Blue Pearl's faces on it. Do they have their own talk show on Homeworld now, or something??? I think that'd be super cute, if true. _ One of the things I think is so brilliant about this movie- and something you yourself kinda talked about a bit in the reaction itself- is the way they make this movie SO accessible for new viewers by its very design while building it seamlessly INTO the plot. The first song Steven and the Gems sing back on Earth not only serves as a primer for all our main characters' past development, but also stands as our template for what their missing pieces will ultimately be. Steven sings about how he was able to hone his OWN kind of power even despite spending his entire life in his mom's shadow- he showcased the power to CHANGE. The end of Pearl's song gets in to the fact that she never really left Rose's side her entire life (until she was Forced to, when Steven was born), something which Greg ultimately had to force her to relive by "disappearing" as well. Garnet's song is more focused on the fusion part of her missing pieces than the final one, but that's still very vital. And then Amethyst's song has her reflecting on how- despite emerging into loneliness, into a world where she had No real template to follow and no real identity- she eventually found her place with all her family and friends, and it's ultimately reliving various moments of bonding with Steven that brings her back ;w; And not even just that, but this big opening number has Steven quickly showcase every single pertinent power that he fails to use properly later on, just so the audience has knowledge of how said powers are Supposed to work if they never watched the show. It's just great set-up. Perfect for like, parents who happened to watch along with their kids when this aired but had only seen scattered episodes before, or something. _ Greg almost saying "Holy shit!" was probably the funniest gag in this whole film for me, LOL. Your kid's still a teenager, gotta censor that mouth still, bud! XD Man... the whole reset sequence... that was so jarring to watch on first view. I already had a strong suspicion that this would happen when I saw this first, since the song titles had leaked a day or so earlier and this particular song is literally titled "system/BOOT. PearlFinal (3).Info," but it was still OOFIES to see just... every aspect of these characters that you love get unwritten in a flash. _ So, on the topic of Ruby not moving away when Steven's glitchy shield briefly catches the anvil... I like to think she stays put because she simply puts THAT much stock in Sapphire's future vision, and the "fate" that she sees. Sapphire told her she wouldn't last the day, that she'd be shattered, and so this is simply the future she's destined to meet! Why would she ever bother to change anything about that if it's the truth? But then Sapphire chose to DEFY the so-called "truth" here herself, and wow, good for her! What a lovely moment, seeing their meet-cute reversed this time. _ Re: Steg, or as I like to call him sometimes, "Mr. Multiverse..." XD I find this fusion design interesting, as in many ways it's nothing that I'd traditionally expect from mashing Steven and Greg- two very tubby guys- together. Not to mention, the four arms is a super interesting choice when so much of him is *human,* beyond Steven's gem addition. (This aspect is mostly "rule of cool," in my mind.) But I think he's got a six pack because fusion is like, the embodiment of two character's relationship, and Steven and Greg's dynamic has always been one where Steven (very sweetly) thinks his Dad is the coolest rocker in the world, and Greg is always his son's number one supporter in all of the Gem stuff he does, always so, so proud of all he's accomplished. They pump each other up. Thus, boom. Now their fusion is Literally pumped up, ahah. Plus, I just think... especially given the very specific scenario this fusion was born into, Steg is an entity who simply LIVES for the stage. He exists to BE a performance, and so by golly does he go all out. He's serving that rizz. He's doing those Elvis style hip thrusts. He's being all fun and flirty like a real music star might act with fans during a concert. I like him a lot, I'm glad we got to see what sort of fusion Steven spawns with his musician dad. _ Another thing I think this movie does well is establishing factory reset Spinel as like... she's Cute, sure, but so many of her little antics quickly lose their luster and become annoying to Steven as he's trying to solve this day's set of stressful problems, so much so that there is a certain aspect of me that... doesn't entirely blame Pink for wanting to not bring Spinel along to the next stage of her life. I think to her, Spinel served as a reminder of her more immature past that she wanted to grow past and evolve out of as she started colonizing Earth. I also kind of anticipate that... she did not have Any way of grasping her true influence over her. A prominent member of Crewniverse has gone on record saying that the only Gems Pink was able to give a direct, unbreakable command to were her pearls, so like... Spinel was not HELD by Pink's instruction to stay still, she chose this. And she chose this because, much like Ruby earlier, she believed that strongly in Pink's words, in the role she was given. If Pink had given her this game to play, then by golly she was going to WIN. But from Pink's perspective, I genuinely think she assumed Spinel would grow tired of this game and move on pretty quickly. I don't think she had any way of knowing that she'd stand there for over 6000 years instead. I don't think she anticipated that Spinel would CARE about her that much, because her own self-esteem was simply That low. It's still cruel and unreasonably tragic, but... as with most of Pink/Rose's mistakes... just down to her lack of understanding and perspective, really. So yeah. I feel bad for Spinel, but I also understand what underlying thoughts probably led Pink to leave her behind there, and don't think it was Intended to hurt her that deeply. _ It is like 12:30 here lol I might respond to this comment with more rambles later. Or maybe I won't, we'll see. Long story short, I love this movie a lot, can you tell? XD

Novantinuum

I don't know if you noticed, but one thing I REALLY love about the narrative structure of Steven Universe is that we get Rose/Pink Diamond's development shown to us in backwards order. It's honestly super unique and a really interesting way to handle a character, especially one that essentially haunts the overall narrative just by existing. Rose/Pink has done horrible things, she's done amazing things, and just like Steven, she changed. I think about the things she said to Greg during the episode "Greg the Babysitter", where she remarked on how humans had the innate ability to change and grow and how that concept was foreign to her as a gem. Her character is so layered, and I really wish we got to see more snippets of her past in the show. It's really too bad that SU got cut short because of Disney, I wonder what things Rebecca was planning initially. Still, we got an amazing show, a movie, and an epilogue series!

vivian xavier

Since I do not see anyone pointing this out, and idk if you've thought about it, the reason why Spinel looks like a cupheads villain, or old Mickey is because she is supossed to represent exactly that: an old cartoon, something that used to be fun and but now isn't.

Alex S F

Glad you caught the obsidian is temple lady thing! I totally meant to comment that in the finale XD It's such a lovely movie. Speedrunning everyone's character arcs, lots of lovely music hhhhhh. Nice reaction!
