It's true that Oda answered Mikey's question outside of the main story... but you also have to take into account WHEN did Oda decided to reveal this information (The Cover story in question was illustrated after Skypiea was finished).

It's a Cover Story thing from the manga, but it's better to not reveal it until he finishes the Arc.

Oh yeah baby! here we go!.... my favorite part of this arc... The story of Noland and Calgara. Roger being Calgara's friend would be kinda difficult since they are both separated by more than 300 years of history xddd, after all Roger died only 22 years before the start of the story. I will always love hearing Noland speak, his voice actor is Hochu Otsuka, who also voices my Favorite character in Naruto. Good eye with the Shandians and their wings, even tho they are originally from Jaya as we see in this episode... they still had wings just like the people in the Sky Islands... which is definetely odd. There is an answer to this but unfornately Oda revealed it in a Cover Story, a cover story that i can't talk about until you finish this Arc (And don't worry, this is not a spoiler, if Oda put the answer in a cover story it's becasue he wants us to know it). I also love that we get to see more of the Shandian Culture (even tho some of their traditions are quite gruesome) and some of the deities they worship, like that Sun God they mentioned at first. Yeah, both Noland and Calgara were on another league, Zoro and Wyper couldn't even do significant damage to the Snake of the Present time.... but Noland was able to kill this one with a single cut.

"What more can we learn?" he asked last episode, unaware that we were about to delve into a multi-part flashback about the history of these people. :P I genuinely have no idea what is up with the wings though. I'm just as confused as you in that regard.
