The Hero is such a good episode! It's one of the first episodes that proves that the gumball team can make a good emotional episode combined with their usual gumball twist of comedy and ridiculousness. I agree that Gumball's attitude in this episode makes him really unlikable, but I think his attitude allows us to empathize more with Richard. Richard is not that complex of a character, and he may always seem like a lazy dad with no qualities, but he cares about his family, especially Gumball, and Darwin, and he tries his best to make them happy. You can see this displayed in other episodes, like in The Pizza, where despite him unintentionally destroying the universe, he wanted to have a job because it made Nicole 'prood'. So it's understandable that Richard would be heartbroken by the fact that his own son, who he taught how to walk, disregarded him so easily. On a brighter note, we get an interesting look at Alan (the balloon), while this is not the first episode with him as a major role (that would be 'The Storm'), he does create an interesting dynamic with Gumball. I think Alan works as a perfect foil to Gumball because he is the polar opposite of Gumball. As we've already seen, Gumball can be a jerk who is self-centered and mostly cares about himself. While Alan is kind, charitable, and cares more about others than himself. So, while Alan is seen to be perfect to everyone else, Gumball sees Alan as a threat that perfectly goes against everything he stands for. There are plenty of more episodes that explore this dynamic, but this episode solidifies this one-sided hate that Gumball has against Alan.
