STEVEN UNIVERSE: FUTURE Episode 14 "Growing Pains" Full Length Reaction

Comments

When this episode first came out, I remember being blown away by how…real it felt. At that point in time, I had never seen a cartoon actually explore the ramifications of plot line elements on a protag’s mental health. I was also going through some extreme people-pleasing tendencies then, so everything Steven goes through in this ep just hit me like a truck. Fantastic commentary as always, and yes, I always appreciate you going into a bit of your personal experiences, but only whatever you want to share. (p.s. hope your doggy Clyve (Clyde??) is doing well✨

A lot of people in the Fandom didn't really grasp all what Steven is going through..... Is not just him suffering from PTSD from all his past "adventures". He is also dealing with an Identity Crisis since he can no longer fulfill the role of "the helper" for everyone else in his life. And on top of that he's going throught several hormonal/emotional changes since Puberty is also finally catching up with him. Steven is REALLY going through it. To answer your Question: No, Steven has in fact... never gone to a Doctor, he revealed this back in season 2 in the episode called "Nightmare Hospital".

One of the biggest criticisms I've heard from others about Steven Universe has to do with how Steven seems to take everything in stride and how he doesn't even seem angry/upset at the people who hurt him (the Diamonds in particular). But I love how SU Future directly addresses how Steven buried his own feelings so that he could just keep going. We see this from him as early as season one. He doesn't allow himself any time to process his pain or deal with it because his life was so chaotic and full of danger that he couldn't afford to. I feel so bad for him in this episode, it really puts into perspective just how hard he's had it :(

watching this as a teen was WILD. I cannot explain what this show means to me.

Really, really on-point thoughts with this episode. I always like the way the hospital stuff in this one so thoroughly re-contextualizes much of the original show. I think it's easy sometimes to mentally brush over some of the violence in this show because it often IS so cartoony, but this episode goes "no, those were all serious moments of harm for this character and he genuinely needs to unpack everything he's been through" instead, which is a very daring choice.
