*wheeeeze...* Yeahhh... guilty as charged. XD I wasn't the first person to suggest it to be fair- but a long post I made about the idea went a bit fandom viral and sent folks into a theorization frenzy.

Novantinuum is being humble, Mikey -- they were one of the first people to propose that "Wormy Boi" was Corrupted Steven. ;)

Side note as per the fandom experience: Due to an out of context shot of Steven's monster form existing at the back of the series title song intro the whole time, there was a running theory throughout the airing of the whole show that Steven would "corrupt" into that creature, which by the time of this episode... was of course proven entirely correct. What made this so interesting on a fandom level, however, is that the existence of this popular theory made many viewers pay far more attention to the smaller details of Steven's declining mental state in a manner that likely wouldn't have happened if the theory did not become mainstream. For those who were aware of it, it basically turned the viewing experience of this show into something of a Greek tragedy, where one already kind of "feared" where the story was going from the very beginning. Fans of the show as a whole weren't terribly too focused on Steven before this- most preferring to focus their attention to the Gems- so it opened up a whole fascinating new discussion on this character that quite frankly, re-contextualized a lot of the "coming of age" aspects of the original show. Ahahah I could genuinely write an entire collegiate paper on this aspect of the fandom experience, I think. It was fascinating to me... how a simple theory could so thoroughly change the angle and lens with which one views a piece of fiction.

I am very glad that you immediately pick up on the aspect of this episode where like... this intervention isn't "a fix" to Steven's problems. For whatever reason, this was a SUPER common misinterpretations with many fans. But like... yeah. Definitely not a fix, just... that bubble finally bursting. Every emotion he's been struggling so hard to keep hidden finally exploding outwards (due to his powers, in a Very Literal Way) to the point where he can no longer hide it from the people who care about him anymore. It really is SO in this show's style to deal with this situation with "a hug," ahahah- but beyond just how sweet it is in the context of the episode itself, I find it even more deep hitting on a broader scale... because the Crystal Gems we met at the beginning of the show were very much "hit first, ask questions and/or try to understand later." Steven had to outright CONVINCE them to reach out and give a second chance to Gems like Lapis and Peridot. Without his seasons of positive influence, I genuinely do not think they could've responded to the situation presented in this episode in as peaceful a manner. They are capable of being the light and support that Steven needs here DUE to his existence in their lives, and that is so, so sweet to me. Steven may fear at this moment that he's just secretly a monster who only ever brings hurt to everyone around him, but everyone who rallied around him in support know firsthand that this is very much not the truth... that he's just hurting, badly. And yeah, boy howdy does the music hit in this one. It so very quickly brings a wonderful sense of gravity and scale to the situation that makes this episode feel longer and more grand, to me. Wonderful reaction!
