2022-12-12 12:16:07 +0000 UTCHmm, it could be the type of clay. Sounds like it's shrinking a lot while drying, causing it to warp. You'll ideally want to use clay that has minimal shrinkage. We use DAS brand air-drying clay, for reference. Something you could try is gluing the tile down to a square of foam board before it dries, hopefully forcing it to remain flat while it dries at room temp.
