I wanted witches to have consequences for their magic. An eye for an eye so to speak. They have the power to manipulate elements, time, and reality itself however it comes with the price of their own life span. That's why witches desire their soulmates so much. As witches when mated, merge into one being, with their powers and lifespan doubled. The witch queen in particular benefits from this. With a dragon as her soulmate her magic seems infinite although definitely taking its toll. With her on natural lifespan gone, she relies heavily on her mate's life source. Transforming her slowly into a pure dragon.
While Mermaids I decide to take a more fish like/deformed quality, though they retain a certain mysterious beauty. When submerge in water, they have tentacles and coral instead of hair, sharp webbed hands and glowing patterns on their skin. Outside of water they have a normal, human like appearance, only with more cold fish like eyes
