Tim Tolka on Consent Decrees and Police Reform

Comments

Most people who are serious about police and prison abolition understand that it's not as simple as no sense of justice. Halden Prison is an excellent example of a different approach to removing people from society that have created harm while not dehumanizing the inmate or the society enacting the punishment. Taking away someone's freedom is enough. We don't need to maintain the status quo because it's too scary to reimagine a better future. For us in the U.S., we need provocative language like abolishing prisons or defunding the police so we actually pay attention and take this seriously. We don't get very far with milquetoast, non-threatening language. My sympathies with this writer's ex-wife.
