I Was NOT Ready For Emilia's Backstory...

Now that you've finished The Frozen Bond, we can finally start to talk about Emilia's character in more detail. Particularly we can now better understand her actions in Season 1. As this OVA shows, Emilia is super lonely and really wants a friend / doesn't want to be compared to the Witch of Envy. But she also thinks that it isn't possible for people to look at her like a normal person, and that she's so convinced that they'll realize who she is and hate her, so she just opts to push people away instead. This explains why she sort of half heartedly tries to distance herself from Subaru in Episode 1. It can also explain why she puts up with Subaru despite the ways that he hurts her (like in Episodes 12 and 13), because at that point she realized that Subaru actually wants to be her friend for her and doesn't care about the Witch of Envy stuff, and that's worth trying to fix their relationship over. (1:45): The blu ray version of this OVA had a new character voice these texts that come up on the screen. Not really a big deal since you don't know them now, and you probably wouldn't recognize them when the character gets introduced anyways (at least I didn't until someone mentioned it to me). (3:10): This ice bloom thing is the final resort that Emilia mentioned in Episode 1. And she refused to use it while Subaru was still around, because she can't control it, and she doesn't want to have collateral damage. (4:45): I'm not 100% sure on the exact timeline, since googling this info just gets me a bunch of watch order questions. But I believe that The Frozen Bond takes place several years before Subaru gets summoned. (6:30): We'll talk more about the ice sculptures later. (9:30): It's to remember the day with the family of 3 (with the Yeti beast). That cloak is the cloak that the little girl was wearing. This strongly implies that Emilia ended up killing them, and she keeps the cloak to never forget the family. (10:30): Those stones are magic stones and they're very valuable. I don't exactly remember what they do, but I think they can store Mana, or be imbued with Mana so that people who can't use magic can still use them? I think they're basically the equivalent of coal, where it's a resource that is used to sort of fill the role of electricity. (10:45): Cleaning out someone's ear is a traditional Japanese family bonding experience. (13:00): They mention the demihuman war here, and it's a very important event that took place in the history of Lugunica, but alas, it's all in the side stories. The short of it is that the humans won, and established human superiority in the kingdom. The demihumans then became 2nd class citizens and is a major reason for the segregation you see in Episode 1 and why the slums are predominantly demihumans. I'll stop here since I'll probably talk about this more in Season 2. (19:00): Assisting demihumans is apparently illegal, and the slavers found out from the villagers that they were helping Emilia, a demihuman. The slavers then threated to attack the village unless they give up where Emilia was, which they do. Then when the slavers meet Emilia, they threaten to take the people of the village if she doesn't go with them. So after this, Emilia decides to not interact with people again, so that they won't be in danger by associating with her, and she intimidates the humans so that they don't go into the forest where the ice statues are. (19:25): Scary Emilia. Must of rolled a 20 on her intimidation check. (21:25): Yeah Puck in Episode 15 was in his Beast of the End form. There's more lore on the Beast of the End, but I don't know it, since it's in the novel version of this OVA. (26:45): We'll talk more about the Black Serpent later. But it's worth noting that this is just the venom of the Black Serpent, not the Black Serpent itself.

Here is some info on spirits. There are ~4 catagories of spirits. Lesser, Quasi, Greater, The 4 Great Spirits. Lesser Spirits are quite young, and are able to communicate only through basic emotions. They can do some light channeling of mana. These are the little lights that Emilia talks to in Episode 1. Quasi Spirits are older spirits who have an affinity for an element of magic. They are more powerful and are more suited to being used in combat. These I think are what Julius and Emilia use when they do spirit arts magic. A Greater Spirit are powerful elemental spirits who can materialize themselves a body and generally have intellect of a human. Examples would be Beatrice and Puck. The 4 Great Spirits are 4 particular Greater Spirits that are extremely powerful, maybe primordial, and it's a title. Melakuera was one of the 4 Great Spirits, but Puck took that title when he defeated Melakuera.

Easier for me to edit too so win/win I guess 😄

A sad opening to her backstory, but a captivating one. Thanks for splitting the OVA up, it is a lot more digestible for me at least!

Christiaan

Yeah I noticed that after and mention it in the review for part 2!

I'm unsure if you saw what she said at 25:17, but it's important. She once awakened in the ice and can't remember anything before that.
