Giglamesh's backstory is detailed in the epic of Gilgamesh. The oldest writing on the planet. You can find it for free online with an English translation. Fate wasn't lying when it said he is the oldest hero. https://archive.org/stream/TheEpicofGilgamesh_201606/eog_djvu.txt

The true starting point is the FSN visual novel but it's a lot of time investment and a gamble if you will like it or not, instead of starting with anime instead for example. Most people starts "wrong" anyway because they didn't start with Fate route via the VN or the 2006 anime, so I say "dont worry about it" and start wherever as any of them are good starting point

Also, if you're interested in the pure humor of the Carnival Phantasm, it's basically parody with characters from Fate-series and Tsukihime-series (both part of the Nasuverse). If you liked Fate for its characters, you'll love Carnival Phantasm, as it turns the knob on their character traits, and makes jokes with it. Don't worry that you haven't seen Tsukihime, it's another older eroge Visual Novel, with "bad" anime adaptation (don't know if it's even available anywhere anymore). You just won't get some of the jokes they throw in, when you don't know their personalities, but that's fine. And the newer (2021) remake of the Tsukihime VN should be getting official translation this year.

I always find it strange that Garnt talks like several minutes about Akasha and Magic and Magecraft, but doesn't actually define what Magecraft and (True) Magic actually is. I'm taking from the wiki here: Magecraft is the ability to bring about what is possible through Science with supernatural means; although the process is considered a miracle, the result is not. The limits of Magecraft have changed with time, as science evolved and Magic from the past became possible through Science. For example, a spell that produces fire is Magecraft, since it is possible to replicate the effect of the spell through a flamethrower or even just lighting a match. (True) Magic on the other hand is the actualization of events that are impossible to reproduce in a certain era, even if given an infinite amount of time and resources. Here, not only the process is supernatural, also the result must be considered "miraculous" or "impossible". Concepts like Time Manipulation, teleportation, spatial warping and quarantine, and the Resurrection of the dead are miracles thought to be possible only through the application of (true) Magic. All in all, whenever any character in Fate casts a spell (like Rin with her gems, Kayneth with his mercury blob, Kiritsugu's time accel, etc. etc.) it is safe to assume that it is just magecraft. However, we have already been in contact with Magic in Fate/stay night; the Holy Grail is basically only possible through the Third Magic (Heaven's Feel), and The Jeweled Sword that Rin uses in Heaven's Feel Spring Song is connected to the Second Magic.

Haven't really played any "anime games" I think... well, I've played a lot of JRPGs, but that doesn't count right? :D And yeah, Nasu has some other big works that are part of the Nasuverse besides Fate/stay night: "Tsukihime" (I still need to read this Visual Novel), "Mahoyo" or "Witch on the Holy Night" (I think there will be an anime about this), and "Garden of Sinners" (="Kara no kyoukai"). Probably forgot something. Anyway, Garden of Sinners has been adapted by ufotable into a movie series, which is very good! Can recommend it.
