Okayy yeah the details get pretty damn tricky but thanks for further explaining! The consequences are obviously most important moving forward, and it does seem I at least understood that part of it correctly. Thanks man!

They were tricked by Remerio company, when instead of acquiring 600 coins worth of gold, they only got 100 coins worth. And that gold could be sold for 10 times the price within the city. Lawrence could have kept all the gold for himself, but he would have to quickly find a buyer for the gold in the city. That would mean selling it for less than the market value. It would still give him huge profits, much more than what he made by selling them to Remerio. But it would also mean that Remerio would have grudge against him, even when they were the ones not honoring the deal in the first place. Instead, Lawrence buried the hatched between them and gave an offer that would give Remerio a chance to stay afloat. And then sold that 500 coin debt/contract to his "mentor" to gain some money immediately, and pay off his own debt back to Remerio. So, Remerio really gained a lot by accepting those terms, and they should be grateful towards Lawrence, when he could have ended their business instead. But Lawrence is a merchant. And rather than making enemies, he'd like to make trading partners. With this situation, he showed to Remerio that he has the wits, and that he's trustworthy in any future dealings.
