✨New Art//Samhain Slumber

⁤On the night of All Hallow's Eve, when the veil between worlds grows thin, spiritsᅳwhether the souls of the departed or the mischievous faeᅳmay slip into the mortal realm. ⁤⁤To ward off dark forces that might stir, mortals wear costumes and masks, and carve grim faces into jack-o'-lanterns.

⁤⁤Amidst ghoulish decore and garb, fiery feasts and revelries ignite the air with ancient magic. ⁤⁤Yet, in the stillness between celebrations, this is also a time to honor ancestors, to whisper to the dead, and perhaps, in dreams, to receive a visit from a long-lost loved one.

Ahhh! Finally a piece for Halloween!

I love learning about old holiday practices and how they inspired our modern day practice. A strong theory for the origins of Halloween is that many traditions were influenced by Celtic harvest festivals, particularly Samhain. It is one of the Celtic fire festivals, so I believe you would expect to see festivities around a bonfire, feasting, and masks and costumes. Pumpkins were not native to the region so they actually carved faces into turnips, which look absolutely horrifying. (If you choose to look up turnip jack-o-lantern, you have been warned!)

Since this time of the year is all about the veil thinning, I love the idea of, after a night of reveling along with some honoring ancestors, folks drifting off to sleep and having comforting dreams of past loved ones visiting to pass along messages or reconnecting from the beyond.

I actually did this piece as part of the demo for the upcoming tutorial. Of course, I will talk all about it in the tutorial, which I am super excited about! It is full of a bunch of info that I wish someone had taught me earlier on in my journey as an artist. I hope it helps you guys a ton when I get it posted!

Anyhoo, I have finished the filming for the tutorial and now I just need to get through editing! So wish me luck and expect to see it later this week!
