Hello FABULOUS Students! It is finally time for a new challenge, or should I say a nouveau challenge? 😉

The Challenge:

🌟Choose one classic Art Nouveau piece to redraw with either your own character or if you don't have your own character that you want to draw, you are welcome to draw my character, Mist! (see link for her art collection)🌟

If you are extra inspired, feel free to do more than one.

Where to find Classic Art Nouveau Artists and Art

The most popular Art Nouveau artist is: Alphonse Mucha, but you are certainly free to choose work by another artist as long as it is art nouveau.

Click on the artist's name and you can see many of their works to choose from for this challenge!

Italian Art Nouveau (Liberty Style)

I personally also find the Italian art nouveau (or liberty style) posters interesting as well, though they are not as prevalent as Alphonse Mucha's posters. Here are a couple Liberty Style artists:

🔎Take a little bit of time to peruse some of the artists and artwork until you find one that you find interesting to do this challenge with!

HINT: if you decide to use GOOGLE to search for art nouveau you MUST add before:2022 . This will show you search results that were on the internet prior to 2022, and avoids most of the AI sludge. Art Nouveau was, unfortunately, one of the first styles that was super contaminated by AI in the search results.

Example

You are probably familiar with my example! I chose to redraw the piece below but replaced the woman in the piece with my character Mist. I also took liberties to adjust the color scheme and a few elements, but kept the pose, and composition of the original.

📚What does this Challenge teach?

As mentioned in our most recent tutorial, studying and redrawing work from other artists, especially masters, is a highly effective way to improve and incorporate new methods, shapes, and flow into your own work.

While you are drawing, pay attention to the unique composition and shapes that the artist used in the original work as you try to incorporate them into your own art. Commit those techniques that the master artist used to memory so that you can have them in your repertoire for future artworks as well!

Works by Mucha and a couple other artists are interesting in terms of design because of the unique framing elements. It can teach you how to use frames and simple backgrounds to create complete piece of art! (yay for not having to draw highly detailed backgrounds all the time, am I right? ;))
